NY state bureaucrats decree an end to kickball at summer camps

I'm not exactly sure what they're trying to prove by banning several popular kids games at summer camp except that maybe the bureaucrats were always picked last when teams were selected.

NY Daily News:

State bureaucrats have identified a potentially deadly hazard facing our children this summer - freeze tag.

That's right, officials have decided the age-old street game - along with Wiffle Ball, kickball and dodgeball - poses a "significant risk of injury."

And classics like Capture the Flag, Steal the Bacon and Red Rover are also deemed dangerous in new state regulations for day camps.

"It looks like Albany bureaucrats are looking for kids to just sit in a corner in a house all day and not be outside," said state Sen. Patty Ritchie (R-St. Lawrence County).

"I don't think Wiffle Ball is a dangerous sport."

The Health Department created a list of supposedly risky recreational activities - which also includes more perilous pursuits like archery, scuba and horseback riding - in response to a state law passed in 2009.

The law sought to close a loophole that legislators said allowed too many indoor camp programs to operate without oversight.

Under the new rules, any program that offers two or more organized recreational activities - with at least one of them on the risky list - is deemed a summer camp and subject to state regulation.

Ah...so that's it. It's not revenge for kids being mean to them; it's the oldest reason why government does anything - control. Anyone or anything that tries to escape the watchful eye of bureaucrats must be dealt with harshly. And if kids suffer along the way, well, that's just part of the process.

Expect banning "Blind Man's Bluff" next.

SHHHHHH!!!! They might hear you! ;)

When I go to my kids’ Catholic school during recess, I see boys running around playing w/their fingers pointed like guns. I see soccer games, football games, kids climbing the monkey bars, swinging as high as they can, and some aggressive games of basketball going on. Unless the kids are trying to kill each other or are doing something drastically dangerous, they are left to their own devices by the teachers and playground parents. Sure, there are scraped knees, bruises, and knots on the head, but you send them to the nurse or tell them to shake it off. So far, I don’t recall any deaths by playground at the school.

Before the playground, we had a perfectly good empty lot. It had broken bottles and bricks and glass, but it was ours. No one got killed. No broken arms, no broken legs, nothing. Sure, there a gash here and there, but that was all right.

Then the grown-ups came in and built a playground on our lot, and the first thing they put up were... the monkey bars.

The monkey bars came in... we lost 124 kids in one day. Kids were dropping like snowflakes. Losing arms, losing legs, losing everything. And I knew then that they were trying to kill us.

It was then I decided not to play on anything that the grown-ups didn’t play on.

I too went to Catholic grade school and HS. and it was pretty rough and ready. No mollycoddling. plus back in the day we were physically punished by the nuns and brothers...though I doubt corporal punishment is still allowed...

How did we survive????

Bureacrats have nothing better to do then worry about kickball?

My boys used to come home so dirty that we had to hose them down in the backyard!

Kickball, freeze tag, fox and hounds, tree climbing, etc was always part of their play day. We have truly inherited a nanny state!!
