Dilbert Creator Scott Adams Defends Republican Official’s Obama Chimp Email

Who knew the Dilbert guy, Scott Adams, was such a controversial figure? The cartoonist behind the hapless office drone (but not the one who inspired Office Space. That was Mike Judge’s Milton) has found himself in hot water of late, first for comparing women to “children and the mentally handicapped,” and now, for defending Marilyn Davenport, the Republican official who sent emails depicting President Obama as the offspring of chimpanzees.

Ironically, Adams’ defense of Davenport is embedded in a lengthy manifesto about the deleterious PR effects of sticky internet rumors:

Tommy Christopher is absolutely insufferable. His thesis is: Comparing white people to chimps = fine, comparing black people to chimps = racist.

Could someone please point me to the law of political correctness that determines what jungle animals are appropriate for comparison to Democrat politicians who aren't white?

At least two generations of Holder’s people have grown up without ever hearing any criticism at all. They literally can’t take it.

Scott will probably make a comic story out of this and clean up.

He's already blogged about it here:

If your only context is what the Internet says about this story, you assume it's a typical racist act by a Republican who is already guilty by association. But if I add the context that Googling "George Bush monkey" gives you over 3 million hits, and most of them are jokes where President Bush's face is transposed on a monkey, you see what's really going on. Democrats and advocates of civil rights are using the media to further an agenda at the expense of a woman who was probably so non-racist that the photo in question didn't set off her alarms as being a career-ending risk....
The context of the entry was his "getting caught" defending himself, while posting under an anonymous Internet pseudonym. His explanation may have to go on my Profile Page:
Some time ago, I learned the hard way that posting messages with my own identity turns any discussion into an orgy of name-calling. When I'm personally involved, people speculate that I'm being defensive, or back pedaling, or being a douche nozzle, or trying to weasel my way out of something. Speaking with my true identity also draws too much attention to the very rumors I'm trying to extinguish. In contrast, when my spunky alter ego weighs in, people generally focus on the facts presented, including checking the source material to see my writing in context. The masked vigilante strategy worked well until recently. And I'd be lying if I said it wasn't fun.

Howard Cosell was fired for comparing a player to a monkey. The "monkey = racist image" is old news. And the lefties would say it's okay to compare W to a chimp because, well, it's true (they assert). On the other hand, I offer a less well known racist animal image.

When I was in college, I recall a story of a young white jewish male who yelled down at a passing black woman and called her a "water buffalo", apparently because she was being rude somehow. This became a big issue, you see water buffaloes are large black animals from Africa and so his choice of words was carefully chosen and clearly racist.

He countered that water buffaloes are from Asia and besides, it is common in Jewish culture to refer to people as animals, not racist. Frankly, I never heard of that one before or since so sounds like he was blowing smoke there. Nevertheless, it was a big deal and I believe the white student was disciplined. So avoid comparing people to water buffaloes!

Muhammad Ali called Joe Frazier a “gorilla” before the “Thrilla in Manila.”

I seem to remember Bush being compared to a chimp.

Also Rice was too.

>>>Tommy Christopher is absolutely insufferable. His thesis is: Comparing white people to chimps = fine, comparing black people to chimps = racist.<<<

Adams’ mention of this, in its original context, was skewering the lamestream media for making a big deal out of this story, while for 8 years doing nothing about similar comparisons of W to primates. And Adams is correct in his observation.

Tommy C. ‘s thesis proves Adams’ point. Tommy should take his toys and go play on a busy highway.

Lib’s believe they evolved from chimpanzees, so it seems they should take the cartoon as a sign of faith.

It goes back to Darwin and the assumption of evolution.
Darwin actually stated that blacks were less evolved, and by implication, closer to apes, than the other “races”.

Darwinian assumptions are deeply embedded in our culture and it is assumed that he was right about his assertions of relative levels of evolution. This is why the sensitivity is so high.

Too bad these assumptions and the resulting sensitivity are based on a lie.

My only objection is that the comparison is an insult to chimps who have never once attempted to destroy the Constitution or the economy. Chimps have at least some semblance of intelligence and integrity; the denizens of the democrat party have none.

I think there is a reason why Obama won’t whip out his SAT scores, and it’s not the reason Adams assumes.

I think the “water buffalo” story involved a student from Israel who was translating into English a bit of Hebrew slang, which had nothing to do with race. But of course if the noisy students who started the incident “felt” that it was about race, it must have been about race.

It’s a “chip on the shoulder” thing. That makes everything about race.

Yes, there is the DUmp epithet “Chimpy Bushitler”. And as for Condi Rice, she was off the plantation, so she did not really count as being black. An American of African descent (to use Herman Cain’s term) does not count as being authentic unless there is major Kool-Aid consumption.
