Chicago Sun Times ^ | 4/20/11 | PAUL BOND

The power of Ayn Rand devotees has impressed some Hollywood distribution executives, who took note of the hefty $5,640 per-theater average scored by “Atlas Shrugged: Part 1” during its opening weekend.

“Shocking,” one executive said about the healthy business the low-budget film has been doing, considering its “awful” marketing plan.

depends why you go. To sit with a bunch of strangers or to watch the movie.

Sometimes, sitting with a bunch of strangers is the better of the two.

I was in my “Mid-30’s” ‘til I turned 38. I was in my “Late-30’s” ‘til my 40th birthday.

A "Love Note" Sent To Jim Robinson

“I do so enjoy these money raising pleas. Too bad you kicked off so many patriots back in the day that criticizing the big spending Bush was a cardinal sin on the so called conservative free republic.

Nope, I will happily continue to freeload information from this site. If the lights go dark, well, so be it...”

“I’ve spoke to a few folks that are middle aged that say “Atlas who”? They can tell you all about American idol though.”

I saw my nephew at a family function and he had a copy of “Atlas Shrugged”. I’ve read it twice so I was talking to him about it. None of my inlaws had ever heard of the book. It’s one thing not to have read it or not to like it but never heard of it? I couldn’t believe it.

Just got back from seeing it, thought it was very good. Not great, but well-done, true to the source material and a solid foundation upon which to build Parts 2 and 3.

I was also one of three people in an audience of about 75 to LOL at Armin Shimerman’s scene as Dr. Potter from the National Science Institute. Given his previous role as Quark on Star Trek Deep Space Nine his casting had to be deliberately, and deliciously, ironic.

They want to move on to the point where there’s just an ass on the screen. No one will care who the ass belongs to or why it is farting. It will win Best Picture.

Forget about the "40" bullsh*t. You are in the absolute prime of life and when you cross over to 40...well there is not alot of difference except in your own mind. It's a wonderful time of life including turning 40!

At 49, you start saying that you are pushing forty. Remember that fifty is the new forty.

“It’s amazing to me that the producers didn’t plan ahead with more prints.”

Well, you never know.

“Music Within,” a really, really, *really* good movie started with a limited release in a few theaters, and failed to catch fire—which always reminds me of P.T. Barnum’s maxim, “Nobody ever lost money underestimating the taste of the American public.”

“Nobody ever lost money underestimating the taste of the American public.”

Actually, I think that was H.L. Mencken.

“I’m under 40 and I don’t go to any movies. I just don’t get the concept of sitting in a darkened room with a group of strangers to stare at a screen for 2 hours.”

I feel the same way and haven’t been to a movie in years, but I went to this one and was glued to the screen for the entire 90 minutes. The audience was silent and applauded at the end. Give it a try, you’ll like this movie

“”BTW, when should I start referring to myself as almost 40. I’m a week from 37 and saying “almost 40” is sending shivers down my spine!””

Don’t do it...I did that as I didn’t feel 40 was such a big deal. When I reached 40, it turned out I minded it more for some reason than any other birthday I’d ever had. I’ve had 35 more and it’s a breeze!

You're supposed to take a girl and amuse her with the "popcorn box trick".

“Actually, I think that was H.L. Mencken.”

I googled it before posting and got so many different attributions and versions that I just decided to go with the one I’ve been using all my life. Seemed as good as any of the others. Although, for all I know, it could have been Mencken.

I downloaded it once but lost it when my hard-drive crashed.

The director is Mike Judge, the man behind Beavis & Buthead. Funny thing is, he’s conservative in his outlook; kind of a conservative elitist. One of the running jokes on Beavis & Buthead was how those 2 14-year old somewhat unfortunate human beings were always indulged by others in society & given the benefit of the doubt. Idiocracy projected this fear of the dumbing down of America to the future.
