Germany to Hungary: New constitution breaches EU values (Bans Abortion, Protects Marriage)

Germany has warned the conservative Hungarian government that its new constitution, passed by parliament on Monday (18 April), is not compatible with European Union values.

"We are observing the developments in Hungary with great attention and some worry," German deputy foreign minister Werner Hoyer said in an emailed statement. "The media law adopted at the start of the year shows an attitude towards fundamental rights which - despite some amendments - is hardly compatible with European Union values."

...The Hungarian parliament approved the document 262 votes to 44, with the Socialist and green parties boycotting the vote and the far-right Jobbik voting against it....

The European Commission for its part has washed its hands of the matter, telling EUobserver that the constitution is for Hungarians to decide and that the country remains a constitutional democracy....

The new text, heavy with references to Christianity, protects the life of a foetus "from conception" and preserves "the institution of marriage between man and woman".

A further explanation on why the left-wing EU die-hards are up in arms over this constitution:

From Hungarian Constitution Invokes St. Stephen, Abolishes Abortion

The decadent EU does everything to destroy Marriage and Europe and capitulate to the stone age.

Actually, it's not everywhere that Europe is being laid flat by progress.

So the Hungarian Parliament has ratified this Tuesday a new Constitution....

After the introduction of the new constitution, the left stone age opposition seethed.

Because the text is a clear rejection of political masochism, it begins with the words:

God, Save Hungary

National Commitment

We, the members of the Hungary Nation, assert our responsibility to say the following for all Hungary at the beginning of the millennium:

We are proud of the fact that our King Stephen, the Saintly Patron of the Hungarian State for a thousand years had built a secure foundation and placed our Fatherland in the line of Christian Europe.

We are proud of our forebears, who persisted for that, who have fought for the freedom and independence of our Land.

We are proud of the great spiritual accomplishments of the Hungarian people.

We are proud that our people had defended Europe for a thousand years and whose common values were enriched by their talents and enriched its industry.

We recognize the role of Christianity in the persistence of the Nation.

The Constitution protects the institution of marriage as a life in common between a man and a woman as well as the family as the foundation of the nations progress.

The constitution promotes the decision for the child.

The defense of the family was the ruling concerning the main focus of the law.

The anti-child opponents wanted to put forward their opposition to unlimited respect for human life.

Actually the new Constitution said:

"The value of human life is unfathomable. Every person has the right to life and human value; the life of the foetus is protected from conception to birth."

The new Hungarian constitution contains also a debt limit, unlike any other European constitution has.

So...if Germany continues to object to Hungarian independence, will they call for a re-do of WWII?

The real reason they’re worried about Hungary is that the hungarians removed free speech from their constitution.

Strange, this Hoyer guy is FDP. When that party is described as “liberal” it means “classical liberal” in the sense of a free market economy. It’s center-right in German politics.

The government for its part, terms the text the ‘Easter Constitution’ to symbolise the ‘rebirth’ of the Hungarian nation and rejects complaints that the government has pushed through the document, saying that they opened discussions on the paper a year ago and that opposition parties boycotted the process.

Wasn’t sure what I was gonna do when our economy gets worse but after reading this, I’m going to Hungary!!!!!

Germany has warned the conservative Hungarian government that...

What does that mean? Did the German Chancellor summon the Hungarian Ambassador? Did the Bundestag pass a resolution? Or is it just that some vocal minority issued a press release.

Werner Hoyer is not Germany. He does not even represent the ruling party, CSU/CDU. Germany was furious with the Left, but considered the Christian Democrats too spineless so enough Conservatives chose a party somewhere between Ross Perot, Ron Paul and Christine Todd Whitman to force the CSU/CDU to form a coalition with them, stupidly further weakening the CSU/CDU’s spine. Hoyer’s post was the FDP’s pound of flesh.

Actually Germany is right. Hungary agreed to quite a few things when they joined EU. The problem is that EU is falling apart with nationalism and ‘right wing’ movements bashing EU, but no one wants to admit it.

Curious creature this new Hungarian government.

They seem to embrace traditional social values, and yet had no qualms about helping themselves to the contents of everyone’s 401K.

Anyway, “EU Values” is an oxymoron.
