Nevada Sen. John Ensign (R) plans to announce Friday he will resign his Senate seat, aides said Thursday.
Ensign has been under investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee over whether he violated Senate rules during his affair with Cindy Hampton, a former campaign aide. Hamptons husband, Doug Hampton, was Ensigns deputy chief of staff during most of the extramarital relationship.

I sure hope it’s not a Harry Reid clone. One is more than enough.
Good bye pretty boy!
My guess would be that Dean Heller gets the appointment. He would be the logical choice.
Update: Dean Heller is likely to get appointment.
Dead on, Gov. Sandoval will appoint Congressman (and former Secretary of State) Dean Heller, who has proven to be far more conservative in Congress than I thought he’d be when he barely beat out Sharron Angle (whom I supported) in the 2006 primary.
As for Heller’s House seat, you’re correct that nominating Sharron Angle would unnecessarily jeopardize our hold on the seat, especially since the special election will be held under the current lines, which include large swaths of Clark County within the district. I hope that former state Senator Maurice Washington, who represented Washoe County until he was term-limited out in January and who is at least as conservative as Angle (he’s a minister with a pro-business, small-government mindset), runs for the seat and wins the GOP nomination—he’d be unbeatable in the general. And, as a bonus, he’d join Congressmen Tim Scott and Allen West as a third black conservative Republican in Congress who would help erode the ignorant mindset of so many black voters nationwide that blacks can only be limited Democrats.
can only be limited Democrats = can only be liberal Democrats
Maurice Washington would be a great choice if wants to run. So far, I’ve seen no evidence that he’s interested in the job.
No more so than the Democrats would.
Damn, you’re on fire tonight!
The good news is that Angle will have to make her case to the local GOP committees (there will be no special primary if Heller moves up), and that’s unlikely to happen. She’d be the only GOP candidate likely to cost us this seat (since she is the KH equivalent in NV). Apparently both Lt Gov Brian Krolicki and Mark Amodei are looking at having a go for the seat, and either one would easily hold it for us.
I’ve heard that the ‘Rats may seriously contest the seat. Some are pushing state Treasurer Kate Marshall to run.
Who will the governor appoint to finish out the term? Will it be Sharron Angle or that House member who threw his hat into the ring?
The Rats are all over this CD race already...
So far, according to this article and the NVSOS, there is not going to be a primary, the NVGOP picks the candidate to run in the general...
Are you nuts? Do you want Shelley Berkley elected next year?
It’s gonna be Heller.
Good news all around.
Thanks for quitting Ensign.
They won’t win it unless Angle is the nominee in which case it may be a tossup with a strong rat.
Before anyone bites my head off, I’m a Nevadan and Ensign voted the right way on 95% of the issues. He did a lot of outreach to his constituents and voted the way people here wanted him to. And I’m glad that he chose the right option and isn’t running again after this scandal.
I am a huge fan of my congressman, Dean Heller. His district comprises of Reno and all the lower population counties that lean conservative (lots of Ron Paul lovers up here), and we’re really hurting up here for a replacement for him. Angle wants Heller’s seat. I don’t know if Reno will swing her way, although she is from here.
But there is no one else from Northern Nevada who can hope to keep that Senate seat if the gov picks Heller. It will give him a huge leg up in the election and we might keep that seat but the Clark County factor is going to be huge.
I don’t know if Vegas will vote for someone from up north. Ensign was “one of their own,” so once in, people down there kept giving him the nod.
Why would we bite your head off ? A lot of Dems are putting too much faith in Shelley Berkley to get the seat back, but the lady’s record is certifiable moonbat. I think the race is somewhat similar to Gibbons vs. Dina Titus in ‘06 (Gov contest). Like Gibbons, Heller is a northern NV’er running against a LV-area pol. Frankly, knowing that the scenario has changed, were I Berkley, I’d decline to run as Heller will have over a year and a half of a leg up as the Senate incumbent (presuming Sandoval doesn’t go with someone else) and this becomes more of a kamikaze run.
Because I like and defended the majority of Ensign's voting record.
There is a very real possibility that we don't keep Heller's House seat. We have a lot of Bay Area transplants here who keep voting like they are still in Kalifornia.
