Jared Bernstein, chief economic adviser to Vice President Biden and a White House advocate for more spending to create jobs, is leaving at the end of April to join a prominent Washington think tank.

Bernstein is close to labor unions and has been skeptical of free trade arguing that more government spending to boost the economy was critical.

Bernstein is not an economist by training; He studied music, social work and other fields and got his doctorate from Columbia in social welfare.

“With the recession over, Obama has been turning his attention to reining in the debt.”

The entire article reflects a bizarre world view. There’s an “economic” think tank where they study policy to spend money to help the middle class and the poor. There are sentences like; “In the first two years of President Obama’s tenure, the White House was focused on arresting the recession. As a result, it looked largely to programs that would stimulate the economy through government spending.”

The entire piece is propaganda.

"Bernstein is not an economist by training; He studied music, social work and other fields and got his doctorate from Columbia in social welfare."

Isn't getting in waaaaaay over one's head the universal theme of Obama's administration?

The guy deserves combat pay. Imagine day after day trying to explain things like simple economics to a dunce like Biden?

Why does Biden even need an economic advisor? Not sure if Cheney had one but theres another example of a bloated governmnet position. Couldnt the VP share the President's economic advisor?

And - this is secondary to the fact that Biden is an idiot and probably never spoke to this guy.

“They offer PhD’s in social welfare?”

I think the fact that they do offer them has caused the government to create a market for them. There’s no conceivable use for somebody trained in “social welfare” outside the government.

In Florida, before 1970, if you were arrested a deputy would sit with you while you made phone calls and got somebody to take your kids. Somehow, it always worked. Then we got an agency staffed with social welfare degrees (from the hippie crop then graduating) and overseeing the kids from arrested folks became their issue. We ended up with a nightmare where state social workers “oversee” 45,000 children per year from arrested people.

The social workers place the children with volunteer homes many of whom, it turns out, are child molesters. The kids are mostly warehoused several per room in private homes and trailers to the tune of roughly $2500 per month per kid per “care giver.”

Here’s the kicker. The state’s population has exploded, but the number of kids remains constant. I’m guessing that’s due to the tracking limitations. The agency has lost numerous children who were later found to be murdered.

I think we need to re-think what degrees colleges offer. The social welfare degree is for communist states.

Why are we paying for the Vice President to have his own econimics advisor? In fact, other than a couple of speech writers, a social secretary, and someone to arrange his travel I don’t see why the VP needs any of his own staff at all. He can just use the staff already employed in EOP.

” Bernstein is not an economist by training; He studied music, social work and other fields and got his doctorate from Columbia in social welfare. “

This evening’s cello concerto will be performed by a stockbroker who thinks he knows how it should sound.

This is macroeconomic karaoke.

And, by the way, it sucks.

Leaving a sinking ship! A think tank is just where the progressive Mr. Bernstein belongs. Or maybe held in one of Biden's closets at the Naval Observatory's underground bunker with all the other smart elites that haven't a clue, but keep on planning economic policy.

He was a CNBC hack before being picked up by Biden. Think of Steve Liesman’s leftist views, but on steroids. He doesn’t just drink Kool Aid, he manufactures it, and should get the Order of Lenin for what he’s done to Amerika.

To tell him where the sales are or cheap gasoline.

Imagine that.

A college degree in how to take other peoples money.

Only a leftist would need a college degree to know how to be a thief.

...advocate for more spending to create jobs...joining think tank

LOL. The "tank" is getting some real brain power there. Guess they didn't think very well when they hired him, which makes the rest of their thinking rather suspect.

Let’s be kind to Jared... The Summer of Recovery (2010) was a complete success. Joe Biden is now responsible for getting an agreement on spending compromises necessary to satisfy the right on the Debt Ceiling vote — no problem... he can sleepwalk his way through those negotiations.

So now Jared can go off to do the important work at the progressive left-leaning economic think-tank he’s going to where they haven’t been right on anything policy-wise in his lifetime.
