The States With The Worst Income Inequality
24/7 Wall Street ^ | 04/21/2011 | Douglas A. McIntyre & Charles B. Stockdale

Posted on 04/23/2011 4:07:45 PM PDT by arderkrag

There was never any chance that in America income would be distributed like it was supposedly done in the Soviet Union – to each according to his ability and his needs. If capitalism is the key to the rise of the US economy, then the concept that some people can be richer than others is near the heart of the system. Americans worship self-made billionaires such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett because they believe that it’s possible for them to be that wealthy too.

Unfortunately, there are far more poor people than wealthy ones. America is the world’s most visible case of that. A small number of people in the US control most of the income, wealth, and property. More than one in eight people live below the poverty level and that number has grown recently. No matter what the government has done to bridge the difference between the groups, it has been ineffective, and that situation is not likely to change given the current tax laws. The wealthy have a higher tax rate, but even what they keep after taxes is far in excess of what most other Americans have.

---SNIP---
The Marxian ideal is a “zero,” and a state in which one group possesses all the wealth and another has none would be “one.” The state in which the inequality is greatest in America, New York, is 0.5. Global statistics show that in come countries, the figure is as high as 0.7.

Shouldn’t the title read “Worst Income Equality”? Worst Inequality = Most Equal, right? ;-)

From the artile “Unfortunately, there are far more poor people than wealthy ones. America is the world’s most visible case of that. A small number of people in the US control most of the income, wealth, and property. More than one in eight people live below the poverty level and that number has grown recently.”

What A pant load this is. Th entire article is absolutely stupid.

Yes, the wealthiest people in the World live in America, for the most part. Yes, many more people than that earn less than the poverty level. However, Our poor are by far the wealthiest poor in the World. They are the fattest Poor people you will ever see. Most ‘POOR’ in this country own a car, have color TV with cable, have their own bed, live in a home or apartment with Air conditioning, own a DVD and some sort of video game system .\\

The ‘POOR’ in this country live like the upper middle class and wealthy in most countries.

Te fact is that there will always be poor and rich. In a conservative capitalist society a person can move between the classes.

It is imposible to look at a group of high earners or high net value people in this country and tell where they started out in life. That can not vbe said of many countries.

There are no poor people in this country. People in Haiti are poor, the “poorest” American would live like a king in Haiti.

exactly, This clss warfare bulsh%& has got to end.

In no way is anybody poorer because Bill Gates is rich. As a matter of fact Bill Gates has made many many people wealthy and not only those that work for or with him in any way.

A healthy society needs balance, not equality. 49% of the population can’t all be rocket scientists and 49% can’t be poor either. Our problem is that we are creating too many poor and we’re out of balance. Our welfare state is exactly what is producing so many poor folk.

like it was supposedly done in the Soviet Union – to each according to his ability and his needs

Karl Marx actually said "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs."

Some more of this class warfare b.s.

If I was all that upset about living in one of those supposed "inequality" states...I'd move.

They can bitch all they want, but I will share my money with whomever I please...

GINI is a Marxist-created index that is absolutely idiotic. If everyone is in poverty, the index says the economy is just grand. If there are just a few prosperous people, the index still reads pretty good. The more people get wealthier, however, the WORSE the Index gets.

Since the U.S. has fairly little true poverty left, it’s a decent measure between states, however.

Given the oil wealth, its not surprising Texas and Louisiana are high on the list. And the influx of newer wealth explains Florida, Georgia and Alabama. But that Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and Illinois, states that have massive state intervention supposedly to eradicate poverty, are so high on the list should be the shame of liberalism.

re: Our poor are by far the wealthiest poor in the World

Exactly! And there has never been a country where it’s worked out like the socialist mind would have you believe is the correct way. In every socialist country you have the elite who have what the upper class has in a capitalist country.

I would much rather be poor in America than rich in a lot of countries around the world!

And the writer of this garbage article has never stuck their head out of their insulated ivory-tower existence in their life or they're flat-out lying. I'd give it 50-50 either way.

one in eight people live below the poverty level

Quick, import a few million more third-worlders. We can easily get that ratio up to one in seven.

The liberal answer is for everyone to be poor. no rich = income inequality and all the power to the govt

It’ll work the same way as their answer for education - make it all equal by making it all crappy.

” More than one in eight people live below the poverty level and that number has grown recently.”

Terribly misleading statistic. I think this statistic is based either on AGI or census values. The number does not count the large amount of transfer payments at all levels of government. Aside from self-destructive behaviors, the lower class has a better lifestyle than the middle class. The lower class does not pay federal income tax and transfer payments are mostly not taxed. In addition, I think the lower class has lots of economic activity from the black market. There is a large incentive for the lower class to work off the books.
