What got the USA into WW1? ZOT needed.

I'm trying to get the facts that show why the USA got into WW1. As I can tell, Wilson was president. The US was neutral...did not want to get involved. Britian and the Allied Powers were losing the war against the Central Powers. The Balfour Declaration promised a Jewish state in Palestine. The Lusitana was armed and ordered to attack German U-boats. Propaganda was created to convince American populace that Germany needed to be conqered.

Can anyone help me get more info on the subject?

Thanks. FG

“Obama believes we had 55 states when we entered WWI.”

Correct. Alaska became #56 and Hawaii #57.

The U.S. got into the war because it was rumored that BP was going to drill for oil in the Gulf of Mexico.

Germany was under the control of the Kaiser who was practically certifiable. His government was not one inclined to produce peace. And his government was directly responsible for the creation of the Soviet Union since it put Lenin and the Bolsheviks back into Russia in the first place. The creation of the Soviet Union was more the fault of Germany than any other nation.

Hitler was a creature of the German High Command as well and resuscitated the party which it had controlled throughout the war transforming it into the Nazi party. So the two things you claim could have been avoided: the USSR and Hitler were both products of the German Army.

Your scenario is possible but not to me very likely given the nature of the German Army and the Kaiser. It would have been only a matter of time before the German power would have recovered and gone back on the attack. And the Soviet Union would have been an ally.

Does this site have any merit? http://smoter.com/america’.htm

Is this true: On Sept 17, 1914 the huge ocean liner, Lusitania, had her armament mounts installed and entered the Admiralty fleet registered as an “armed auxiliary cruiser.” Four days later, Churchill was viewing the Lusitania towering above him when an acquaintance remarked that the navy had nothing like her. Churchill mumbled: “We have. To me she is just another 45,000 tons of live bait.”

‘it is simply ridiculous to imagine that the Mexican government would have acted on it’

It was only about a year after the ‘Green Grows’ under Pershing had invaded Mexico, chasing Pancho Villa. Some Mexicans actually remembered the Mexican American War and the loss of the American southwest, and none of them were very happy about it. (By the way, Pershing’s men sang the song ‘Green Grows the Lilacs’ as they marched, and Latin Americans have hated the ‘Gringos’ ever since.)

There’s no shortage of material and I’ve enjoyed Tuchman’s work.

Germany sent Lenin in the hopes that he would get Russia out of the war. There is no way Germany would have allowed the Soviet Union to survive after the war. Most of the European territory that became the USSR was handed to them at Versailles. As for Hitler, the German high command sent him to spy and report on the NSDAP, not to revive it. And they wouldn’t have needed to do that if Germany hadn’t lost the war.

Yet Mexico did nothing about it. There was nothing they could do and they knew it. The Zimmerman note was an absurd fantasy.

That site seems to be fairly accurate. But I would also advise reading some of the books mentioned by others above. The more you read about it the better off you will be since everyone has an axe to grind over something.

The USSR was not in existence till just before we entered WWI, and they were pretty busy with the White Red Civil War. Besides, they were at peace with Germany.

They were at peace with Germany?
Then you really don't know anything about Russia.
What they say and what they do has always been a hallmark of Russian thinking.
It is the suckers who swallowed that story "Hook - Line & Sinker".

The song claim is usually dated to the Mexican War, not the Wilson intervention under Pershing. And even then it's wrong.

Gringo goes back to at least 1786 in Spain and probably derives from griego or "Greek." Meaning a foreigner.

Middle Europe has always been a pain for the Roman, Spanish, French, British and American empires. WWII ended with the desire to permanently cripple what the Germans view as their legitimate interests (look up Morganthau plan). However the Germans appear to be impossible to hold down. Even as we speak they are working with the Russians (and perhaps Chinese) to bring down the American empire. If the so-called Nordic Euro is created (at least partially backed by gold), bye-bye Pound and Dollar. On a separate but related note, the Bolsheviks would never have made it without substantial help from the Germans after the war in training their army (which was fighting the American army inside Russia until 1923). Again, they are no friend of the American/British empire and because of the nature of the economic beast, never will be.

Would the Soviet Union even have existed if the Germans had won?

The Soviet Union wouldn't have existed without the Germans. The Kaiser paid for it: $60 million gold marks delivered to Lenin to buy a revolution in Russia—and pull Russia out of the war. (Russia was an ally of Britain and France.) Once he'd bought an army of goons and engineered his coup, Lenin immediately obeyed his German paymasters and pulled Russia out of the war.

Churchill send in troops (British and U.S.) to try to beat back the Reds, but it was too late to reverse the coup.

Thanks. Read AQWF a long time ago, and it was quite a good book. The Keegan book on WW I is good, and gets you most of what you need to know. Liddel-Hart also wrote a good one on it.

WW I is a very poorly understood war in this country and that is a shame since it is extremely important. WW I caused the slide in the confidence of Western Civilization. Before the war, Europe was vigorous, confident, and proud. After the war they became plagued by either resentment, nonsense philosophies, or self loathing and doubt. They really have never recovered.

Because Lenin thought that the German workers would eventually overthrow the Kaiser and establish a German Communist state.
