EL PASO, Texas -- Luther Jones and Gilbert Sanchez were taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after a jury found them guilty of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Twelve jurors agreed Jones and Sanchez devised a scheme to make money and defraud the citizens of El Paso County of honest services by rigging a multi-million dollar contract to digitize records in the district clerks office in 2004.
The jury reached the guilty verdict around 1:30 p.m. after deliberating for roughly seven hours over two days.
Jones and Sanchez showed little visible reaction to the verdict, looking straight ahead. Jones swallowed while hearing the outcome. His daughter burst into tears.
U.S. District Judge Frank Montalvo revoked bail for both as soon as the guilty verdict was read. He also ordered that they must not transfer or spend any money except to pay bills.
I dont know what he was expecting, said John Jones, Jones brother and attorney. But we will file a motion for bail.
Jones other family members had no words for the media as they left the federal courthouse. Sanchezs family also left without comment.
It had obviously been traumatic, said Sanchezs attorney John Granberg. I mean this trial has lasted about three weeks, and obviously this takes a toll on everybody.
Im surprised at the verdict. I gotta go, said Jones attorney Stephen Peters appearing to be choked up as he abruptly walked away.
