Obama campaign manager: 2008 model won't be enough to win second term By Michael O'Brien - 04/25/11 03:59 PM ET
President Obama's campaign manager stressed Monday that Democrats couldn't rely on their 2008 game plan to win a second term for Obama in 2012.
Jim Messina, Obama's former deputy chief of staff-turned-campaign manager, released a strategy video to supporters outlining the campaign's initial steps toward securing victory next fall.
And the key takeaway from Messina was that he intended to throw out the 2008 model and rethink Obama's strategy for 2012.
"The 2008 campaign was the most special thing a lot of us have ever been a part of," Messina said in a Web video. "But if we just run that same campaign, we stand a good chance of losing. We've got to run a new campaign."
Messina laid out five steps to winning in 2012, "Expand the electorate;" "Build something new;" "Grow the grassroots in the states;" "Measure our progress;" and "Work for every vote."
Under that rubric, Messina encouraged supporters to begin building voter outreach efforts, and he said the campaign would engage in a good degree of listening to its supporters as it shifts into higher gears.
But much of the video was intended to keep fire in the bellies of supporters of Obama, guarding against a sense of complacency that can overtake reelection campaigns.
"This is not 2008. We've got to assume every single day that we've got to build something new, better, faster and sleeker," Messina said. "Republicans are going to be fired up to take on President Obama, and so we all and all of you out there have to take the reins and help build this thing."
"We ought not act like an incumbent, we've got to act like an insurgent campaign that wakes up every single day, trying to get every single vote we can," Messina adds in the video.
Yep, the model of 2008 won’t be enough.
Obama will have to use a lot more of that government laundered campaign cash to buy a LOT of votes.
“Expand the electorate” aka motor voter/cemetary registration/depress military vote....+
Interesting point that they don’t talk about is that many, many people that voted for the guy last time are running away from him this time. It’ll be a waste of money to donate to him.
“2008 model won’t be enough to win second term”
...maybe not, but it certainly should “be enough” for a conviction and a lengthy jail sentence.
it’s ours to lose........
Agreed. Their only point that stands out is Building something new which by definition they cant do, as Socialism builds nothing.
Great! Let’s hope they use the 2008 campaign model then!
It won't work but I guarantee that it will be used.
Doesn’t this seem more realistic then the spin coming out of the MSM. ‘08 was a fluke because of the meltdown, McLame afraid to fight and Obummer not having a record. Things are way different now as the ‘10 midterm has shown. This dope is in real trouble. Just look at who he has to go to in his campaigning lately. Collage kids and Rev Al’s black confab. He has a real problem with his base not to mention all the independents that now hate him. His record is a disaster.
Listen, Punk (Mesina),no way in the world you’re going to get the 70 million votes you got in ‘08. And there’s no way in the world the Republican isn’t going to get significantly more than the 65 m votes Bush got in ‘04. So the only strategy is to tell the Obama infestation that they’d best govern like they’re cleaning out their desks on January 20,2013, so they’d better govern to avoid prosecution by the incoming administration, which will be under all sorts of pressure to go after them.
And may you never find a model that IS good enough.
“Expand the electorate” translation: let felons vote, let illegals vote, let dead people vote, don’t check voter ID.
I bet it still plays an integral part, though.
Yep ... he won’t have old George to kick around anymore.
Reagan Democrats are up for grabs. The GOP is focusing on the rich who don’t need government. The Democrats are focusing on the poor who need government. The Reagan Democrats are focusing on getting a family supporting job but they don’t want to move to China.
They must have known that the 2008 model wouldn’t work in 2012 since election night, 2008. Anybody paying attention would have known that.
I bet it still plays an integral part, though. "
It's like Hoover. You break it, you own it.
Don’t forget the fraudulent contributions.
