After weeks of widespread speculation about her future, Katie Couric is finally ready to go on the record.
"I have decided to step down from the CBS Evening News," Couric tells PEOPLE exclusively. "I'm really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we've been able to do in the past five years in addition to the reporting I've done for 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning. In making the decision to move on, I know the Evening News will be in great hands, but I am excited about the future."
What's next for the 32-year broadcast veteran? "I am looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more multi-dimensional storytelling," she says, adding that other details, including when and where the show will air, are "still being discussed."
As she launches the next phase of her career and her new book, The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons from Extraordinary Lives, she is also juggling exclusive interviews with astronaut Mark Kelly, husband of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, as well as British Prime Minister David Cameron – and she's covering the royal wedding.
"The bottom line is that I love doing all kinds of different stories," says Couric, 54. "I have a lot of areas of interest and I want to be able to fulfill all of that."

When she decided on her very first broadcast to feature the birth of Suri Cruise, it was over for her. She turned the CBS Evening News into “Entertainment Tonight.”
Say what you will about Walter Cronkite, but would he have mentioned Suri Cruise? I don’t think so.

A “couric” is an international unit of fecal weight.
She’s going to study to fill her life’s passion, and become a Proctologist.
She can join Dan Rather at wherever the heck he went. Don’t remember nor care what channel or infomercial it is.
According to the Nielsen rating service, Perky Katie draws 6.4 million viewers per newscast. That’s roughly two-thirds of the typical audience (9.8 million) for Brian Williams and NBC’s “Nightly News.” ABC’s “World News” with Diane Sawyer averaged 8.7 million viewers. Bottom line: Couric is a failure as a TV news anchor. I never liked her but Perky Katie’s shabby treatment of Sarah Palin during the ‘08 campaign really ticked me off. Couric is a annoyingly smug little lefty. Overpaid and way overpraised. I hope her career follows the same track that Dan Rather’s did...to oblivion.
Watched her once, the first or second night she was on. That was the last time I watched any major network news. Can’t remember the last time I watched a network news show before that.
