Until Tuesday afternoon, the future was looking grim for Mariano Cardoso Jr.
Brought to this country illegally by his parents when he was a baby, the 23-year-old Capital Community College student was facing imminent deportation to Mexico, a country he did not know.
But while at school Tuesday, Cardoso got a call from Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Connecticut, telling him that federal immigration officials had granted a rare stay of deportation and that in all probability he will be able to remain in the U.S. indefinitely
Professors, fellow students and immigration activists were the first to come to his aid, launching a grassroots campaign on his behalf after his appeal of his deportation order was denied in February. Media coverage caught the attention of Blumenthal and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who last week wrote to immigration officials urging them to defer Cardoso's deportation.
"I feel relieved," Cardoso said after learning the news. "I wasn't sure it was going to happen."
Blumenthal's office announced the decision. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials confirmed the ruling Tuesday evening.
"I am thrilled by this outcome, which is good for him and good for the country," Blumenthal said.

That's what the holy joes and do-gooders have to understand. Every time an illegal is advanced somebody who's been waiting patiently and preparing himself to come here to be productive is set aside like a dirtbag down at the levee.
Why do we have to tolerate this Mumbo Jumbo language when dealing with these illegal aliens.
And this taxpayer paid RINO should be ashamed of himself.
Man, am I confused—I didn’t think the (so called) DREAM act passed. I suppose this was just another example of politics and act-utility trumping the rule of law. There’s been a lot of that going around these past couple years.
Connecticut’s faux Vietnam War hero on the job. No one should expert this character to have any capacity for exercising sound judgment or for anything but bringing attention to himself.
I am so sick of these parasite illegals having more rights than we do!
I would think that Blumenthal has just committed a crime. Just because he is a Senator doesn’t mean he can break the law. If businesses can be (and should be) fined for knowingly hiring illegals then this so called Senator should be held to the same standard. In fact he should be in jail RIGHT NOW and the criminal he is supporting should be on his way back to Mexico.
How did he manage to get a high school diploma and admission to a public community college with no legal status in this country?
So all the hardcore criminals have been deported?
WTH is an “undocumented student?” Is it a student who has never written?
If you are part of one of their potential target voters and some pesky law is in the way, and you are Dem...
If not, expect the “I care about you situation” form email back and have it forgotten in minutes.
The jackass is a "college student" and he has never heard of Mexico? I've got to call bull**** on that. You can bet your sweet cervesa that he celebrates Aztlan and Cinco de Mayo. I'll bet he knows what "affirmative action" and "discrimination" is also. Probably has a huge race card.
You know, I just remembered that there’s a homeless woman in CT who faces jail time for enrolling her kids in a school district in which she is not a legal resident. Perhaps the good senator can intercede on her behalf as well.
