Study: Enviro-light bulbs can cause cancer
Washington Times ^ | 4/26/11 | Kerry Picket

According to a recently released German study, the supposed "environmentally friendly" compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's), are reported to have "cancer causing chemicals" that are sent out when the light is switched on, reports London's Daily Telegraph: Their report advises that the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on. Peter Braun, who carried out the tests at the Berlin's Alab Laboratory, said: “For such carcinogenic substances it is important they are kept as far away as possible from the human environment.”

I am sure I am going to die from this crap.

Last year I was changing a few of them that did not fit where they were supposed to fit so I bent them a little. Then I turned on the lights and they did not work at all.

Soon I felt light headed and for a week my throat was like mucus. I definitely got gassed.

Let us see how quickly the EPA$$’s rally round the campfire (LED of course as we do not want to put smoke into the atmosphere) and after singing a few songs from the “book of the undead” the LEAP into action and ban the offending globes, thus returning us to the original effort of incandescent bulbs.

Oh wait up, that would mean they would have to show their complete lack of analysis, testing, and scientific findings, and say they were wrong........ not bloody likely.

So if anyone is interested I woul go long on “green” solar lighting.... available freely, every day, just use mirrors to get it into all your dark places.

As for the dark times... a HUGE BULL run on Band-aid Manufacturers seems to be a sure bet.

Just saying......

EL

I use them in my tack room so mice won’t nest in there with light and they are cheap. Other than that, I have no use for them.

I've used CFL everywhere over for years. I haven't broken any yet.

The incandescent is terribly inefficient. We shouldn't stop pushing forward on lamp technology.

I see all the complaints from folks over CFL or LED lamps and wonder if oil lamp users were the same way when the incandescent bulb came along.

You’ve got to be kidding. The electric light swept the world, especially the U.S., like wildfire.

Yes, incandescent bulbs are inefficient, but their only hazard is from broken glass if they are dropped and they can be safely disposed in the trash.

I am affected by CFL bulbs. They make things look slightly pixellated. Yes, it’s weird. It also causes headaches if I am in their presence too long. These are not an option for me and some others. LED is much better.

Alarmist hokum. Note that nowhere are the quantitative measurements of concentration of the various "pollutants" are given. Like it or not, phenol, naphthalene, and styrene all occur naturally, or are released in the course of normal living (see "fire", especially wood, and for gods sake do NOT burn ocean driftwood, as that releases chlorinated dioxins, which, like God, will kill at the mere mention of the name).

ANY material that contains plastic that is heated significantly will release some level of these....computers, computer monitors, TV's, normal fluorescent lights

Please remember to turn off the light when entering a room.
