CARSON CITY, Nevada (AP) Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has named Republican Rep. Dean Heller to replace John Ensign in the U.S. Senate.
The appointment announced Wednesday sets in motion a political scramble on how Heller's seat in the House will be filled. State law says a special election must be held within 180 days of a vacancy.

This portion of governor Sandovaql’s press release is a little worrying though, “Recognizing that this appointment will create a vacancy in the office of U.S. Representative from Nevada’s Second Congressional District, I pledge to work closely with Secretary of State Ross Miller on the timing of the upcoming transition and resulting special election.
I have asked Secretary Miller to provide me with information on the rules for conducting this election at his earliest convenience.”
SoS Miller is a dim, and Dingy Harry sycophant.
Heller is not exactly a Constitutional wizard.
Once I personally had the opportunity to ask him in a Q&A at a small community meeting:
“What’s the purpose of Government”
His brilliant answer after some contemplation was:
“To be fair.”
A number of jurisdictions have regularly scheduled municipal elections on June 7. Would that be too soon?
This story makes it sound like the Secretary of State has the option to make it a free-for-all or an election between candidates nominated by the state party central committee.
I read the statutes, and I would say the latter is the correct interpretation.
This is a partisan office, governed by NRS 293.165.1. It would appear nominees by the State CC’s can turn down the nomination under 293.204, but I don’t see how the SoS can declare a free-for-all election, since this is a partisan office.
Dingy and his Dim-wits have already called for an “Open selection process”.
So far as I know the appointee must be a “Republican”, but if the Dim’s have their way our new congressman will not be a conservative.

The way I read it is that the Republican State Committee makes a nomination, the Democrat State Committee makes a nomination, and other recognized parties if they wish may make a nomination (so far as I can figure this is limited to Green, Constitution, and Libertarian), then they hold a special election. Republicans dominate this district so the only way Dems can win is if the Republican vote is fractured — potentially the Constitution or Libertarian candidate could do that.
Now yes I know lawyers are really good at obfuscating clear language.
(Vacancies in the U.S. Senate are filled by the Governor’s nomination — Dingy has no say over that — Vacancies in the U.S. House are filled by special election.) They are twisting the law around to say that multiple candidates from a political party can file. As I see it that applies only for nonpartisan offices.

Heller Appointed to the U.S. Senate
(Reno, NV) – Today U.S. Congressman Dean Heller (R-NV) made the following statement on his appointment to the United States Senate by Governor Brian Sandoval.
“I am deeply humbled and honored to be appointed to the Senate by Governor Sandoval. There is a lot of hard work ahead to get our state and nation moving in the right direction. Nevadans across our state have been struggling with job loss, high gas prices, and foreclosures. There is no question that our nation needs to change the way we do business if we are going to get our economy back on track and get Nevadans working again.
“As I have stated before, it is time for government to be accountable to the American people and make decisions that lead the way for greater prosperity and fulfill our promises to future generations. Serving in the United States Senate will provide Nevada a stronger voice and greater opportunities to influence the policies that matter most to our great state,” said Heller.

Now please keep Angle out of the special election for CD2.
We have a special coming up in NY that’s not getting a lot of attention, supposed to be an easy win.

Problem is that there is a TEA Party nominee who’s expected to siphon off votes from the Republican candidate. Ironically, that candidate was the DemocRAT nominee for Congress a few years ago. He is personally wealthy and will spend his own money.
LAtest update, we do need to avoid a free-for-all if possible.
The last line of Governor Sandoval’s statement is very important. It reads:

This statement best reflects the state of CD2 today. Nevadans are in a holding pattern waiting for both Governor Sandoval, who has seven days to call a special election, which must occur within six months of the vacancy and we are waiting for Secretary of State Ross Miller for a clarification on the rules of candidacy. The SOS must make a decision based on two options:
1. Central Committees select their Party nominees,
2. A free-for-all election where individuals file on their own, thus likely leading to several Republicans, a couple of Democrats and a few Independents on the final ballot.
The political ramifications are huge under either scenario.
Special Executive Committee Meeting Re-Cap:
Yesterday, after Governor Sandoval’s announcement, Chairman Amodei called for an emergency E-Board meeting which took place yesterday evening. The topic of this meeting was the CD-2 special election and the role of the party. The Executive Committee voted to approve, upon signing and approving a contract, to hire legal counsel to represent the best interest of the Party. Under our legal counsel’s interpretation of the law, the Nevada Republican Central Committee per NRS 293.165 shall serve as the official nominating body for Republican Party for the CD-2 special election. Our legal counsel does not believe that a free-for-all general election is the interpretation of the law. The part of the statute that we are referencing reads:
“[A] vacancy occurring in a major or minor party nomination for a partisan office may be filled by a candidate designated by the party central committee of the county or State, as the case may be… “
The Executive Committee unanimously and firmly believes that this route is the best path in upholding the law as well as preserving our Republican seat. The Executive Committee further believes that it is in the best interest of the State of Nevada that we move forward with the special election expeditiously and smoothly as a Party, in accordance with the law, in order to ensure that the constituents of CD-2 have full representation in Washington, D.C.
Upon advice from our counsel, it must be noted, the entire Central Committee will be responsible for the selection of our CD-2 nominee. This point was discussed and debated, but the final interpretation of the law remains that the full Central Committee body will decide the nominee.
SPECIAL CENTRAL COMMITTEE MEETING:
We need to move forward expeditiously and fluidly in favor of the ruling the Executive Committee has decided to support. Therefore, we will have a “special” meeting of the Central Committee. This meeting will be held in Northern Nevada on June 18, 2011. We do not have the details finalized for that meeting; however, our committee members began working immediately to get the details ironed out. The logistical details of the meeting will be sent out within the 45 day window as mandated by NRP Bylaws.

I think he’s one of those rich kooks who is crazy enough to think he can win rather than someone who is running to help the democrat win.
Corwin should make sure people know he is/was a democrat.
The fact that Jack Davis ran twice for the seat as a Democrat (in 2004 and 2006 IIRC) makes it unlikely that he’ll take as many votes away from the Republican as the Democrat. Does Corwin have the Conservative Party endorsement?

I’m not worried about Davis, I don’t think there are enough idiots who will see “TEA” and vote for him.
This doesn’t feel at all like our 2 recent special losses in NY. Corwin appears to be a competent candidate. And the rat, a county clerk, doesn’t seem like much.
Just announced, the date for the special election is Sept.13, 2011.
Now if it is to be a free for all, can we please encourage a few people to NOT run?
Let them get their “15 minutes” in some other way, a splintered field might hand victory to the dims!
That question wouldn't stump me. My answer would be "...because I didn't want to".
Not a problem, taking a pass on serving in uniform, leaving the defense of the country to some other guys, is always an option under the recruited military system. Candidates shouldn’t get upset though when somebody points that out.
Within hours of the appointment, I had e mail from Sharon Angle begging money for her run in the election coming in 180 days
