Obama to put Petraeus at CIA, Panetta at Pentagon

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama will announce Thursday a major overhaul of his defense and intelligence teams, one that analysts say has the potential - but no guarantee - to speed a drawdown of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

He will nominate CIA Director Leon Panetta to lead the Defense Department, replacing Secretary Robert Gates, who is retiring. Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of forces in Afghanistan, will retire from the military and would become the new CIA chief.

Lt. Gen. John Allen, now the deputy at U.S. Central Command, would fill Petraeus' shoes in Afghanistan to command U.S.-led forces. Ryan Crocker, a career ambassador who served in Iraq and Pakistan under President George W. Bush before retiring in 2009, would return to become the U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, replacing Karl Eikenberry.

The Senate must confirm the nominations. Initial reaction from Capitol Hill was positive.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he "could not be more pleased with these selections" and that they would "provide the leadership to help make our nation safer."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., the chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, praised Panetta and Petraeus. She signaled, however, that she will question Petraeus about his readiness to lead the CIA.

She said in a statement that she had "enormous respect" for Petraeus but until now he had been "a consumer of intelligence ... that is a different role than leading the top civilian intelligence agency."

What an F'ing idiot - The Mil, especially the SOF side has been running its own Intel Ops (and running circles around the CIA and other OGAs in the process, for putting shooters on targets) since 2002....

You give that DADT repealing, openly gay in the military friendly, POS Gates way too much credit. And you can lump that benny-boy loving squid ADM Mullen in there too. They are both an eff’n disgrace.

Rush said today that Obama is putting Petraeus over at the CIA because he deathly afraid that Petraeus might become the GOP VP candidate.

To be honest it shouldn’t make us too happy either, why would Obama put an honest person in charge of INTEL?

Well said and now we get Obama’s sock puppet Panetta to oversee the homosexualization of the military while Gates goes on a speaking tour.

from what I have followed over the years, I think panetta is, in terms of worldview and philosophy, about as good as it gets as far as nominations from the obama administration goes. Unlike the president, panetta, liberal and all, views himself as an american.

I have no opinion on petraeus. generals, by their nature, are political. who knows where this one goes now?

Seriously, Sen. Graham, we don't even want sorts of things you find pleasing.

What the hell does that even mean?

Oh. It should've said...

Seriously, Sen. Graham, we don't even want to think of the sorts of things you find pleasing.

Panette is the Libtard clown who created the debacle that the Denver airport became a famous example of. Aside from the cost overage, missed completion dates, the infamous ‘baggage eating luggage handler, what’s not like about hte way the Pinyata produced an airport.

The good news is - he be minority!

To be honest it shouldn’t make us too happy either, why would Obama put an honest person in charge of INTEL?

Easy answer, he wanted to offer Petraeus a job that he would not turn down, because Obama is scared that Petraeus will accept a VP slot if offered by the GOP.

Or

Obama simply doesn't want to see his own sorry behind blown up in a terrorist attack, and, at the same time, when his own base complains about how the CIA is getting results, he can blame (and then fire) Petraeus.

Petraeus, is many things, but first and foremost, he is a patriot, who will do whatever is asked for his country, and Obama is a manipulator.....I don't see this ending well for the General.

To kneecap him politically. CIA Director is often a politically damaging job.
