Obama Proposes Giving EPA More Power Over Water
Town Hall ^ | 04/28/2011 | Cain Burdeau

The Obama administration proposed new guidelines Wednesday that would boost the government's ability to protect streams, wetlands and other sensitive waterways from pollution.

Business and property rights groups said the policy would stifle economic growth by generating more red tape for builders of homes and shopping centers, but environmentalists defended it as essential step to provide clean drinking water and protect waterfowl habitat.

Administration officials said their goal was to clarify which waters are subject to federal regulation under the 1972 Clean Water Act, a question that two Supreme Court rulings in the past decade have not resolved.

"Today about 117 million Americans _ more than a third of the U.S. population _ get their drinking water in part from sources that lack clear protection from pollution," Environmental Protection Agency chief Lisa Jackson said. "At the same time, businesses and regulators face uncertainty and delay" when seeking development permits.

EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers said the plan would not take effect until after a 60-day public comment period. Even then, it won't have the force of law, although field staffers will refer to the document when considering whether they have jurisdiction over particular waterways. The agencies' next step will be developing a set of binding regulations, Jackson said.

The "FIX" is in......They will be able to effectively shut down any Fracking, drilling, etc, if they get this additional power. And Obama will give it to them with out hesitation if he can.

It’s not just oil. This “wetlands” thing is TOTAL control over property. They are preventing people from doing ANYTHING to their property and destroying people with multi-million dollar fines, taking their property. The EPA is a NIGHTMARE.

If you have a puddle on a dirt driveway that never goes away it’s considered a Wet land.

Good Idea giving the EPA power over water. Now they can order it not to flood when winter snows melt and heavy rains come.

It’snot the law I fear, it’s the regulations written by some nut in charge of an agency like the EPA.

Laws we can fight, regulations do not come from the legislature, but by some bureaucrat azzhole.

I live on a lake in GA. Thankfully Georgia Power manages this lake but the army corps manages the lakes that feed me and manage the Chatahooche river. I love the Army but they are clueless on “dam” management down here.
These proposals by the EPA with the corps as enforcers would be a disaster down here as far as use and enjoyment. And the EPA hasn’t got the slightest on-the-ground knowledge. Meetings I’ve been to with them in attendance feature snarky feminist eco nuts intent on protecting some damn inedible clam that lives in shoreline sludge - at the expense of any humans. A pox on all of them.

Power of water and carbon dioxide is getting close to total control. It’s no surprise that Obama wants this.

The EPA has also been given the authority to set it’s own fines and penalties. Sort of like the IRS. If they get their talons into a company or industry, they will strangle it until it dies.

Where the heck are the republicans? They’ve got the house. They can defund this and other rogue agencies, but they’re too busy “reaching across the aisle” and crying.

And yet our cowardly GOP leadership will do nothing! The TEA Party rebellion MUST expand with the new GOP/TEA reps! They must overthrow the old seniority rules as to leadership, defund EPA, NLRB and other vehicles of Obama tyranny!!! Fear never wins Mr. Speaker!

In obama’s second term we’ll never know what hit us until after the totalitarian like regulations are in effect. Set in place by presidential fiat...executive order...in contempt of our Constitution. In a second term this clown will be completely unhindered in his quest to ruin this country. That’s why we need to get our crap together in a hurry!
