LAUSD to remove chocolate, strawberry milk from schools, superintendent says

Los Angeles schools will remove high-sugar chocolate- and strawberry-flavored milk from their lunch and breakfast menus after food activists campaigned for the change, L.A. schools Supt. John Deasy announced this week.

Deasy revealed his intent, which will require approval by the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education, during an appearance with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Tuesday night.

The policy change is part of a carefully negotiated happy ending between the Los Angeles Unified School District and Oliver. The chef's confrontations with the school system became a main theme in the current season of the TV reality show "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution."

The timing of the flavored-milk ban, which had been under consideration for some time, gave Oliver a positive outcome and allowed the nation's second-largest school system to escape the villain's role. Deasy quickly alerted the school board to the deal before going on television.

In early episodes, Oliver's show had presented former Supt. Ramon Cortines and school board members with unflattering sound bites and camera angles. But with Deasy, the British chef gushed that he'd enroll his own child in L.A. public schools, if he had one here.

L.A. Unified led the nation in efforts to ban junk-food snacks and sodas, but its meals could be healthier, despite exceeding federal standards.

Good move. The taxpayers should not be paying for what is essentially liquid candy. It’s terrible for the kids.

Geesh.. We were lucky to even get chocolate when I was a kid. Strawberry? Haaa.

Maybe they should try taking the LAUSD out of the superintendents coffee..

Jamie Oliver is neurotic. Go away Jamie.

The real problem is free food "for the children". They are waaaaaay over eating.

Yep! Serve a choice of whole milk or water with the mid afternoon sugar cookie snack.
Heck lets just replace the cookie with cottage cheese!

What next? Let’s hope it’s REMOVE THE CHILDREN.

Public education is welfare. Don’t partake of it!

Oh brother. 99% get it all for free anyhow so what do they care?

This is almost as stupid as removing sodas from the machines on campus.

Paraphrasing a quote from a Freeper yesterday -”Typical government action. They can’t control crime, drugs or illegals so instead they control the children of law-abiding citizens.”

Maybe the officials at the LAUSD should spend more time getting the children an education, rather than worrying about what they eat.

The graduation rate for the LAUSD is the second worst in the nation at 40.6%.

Yes, you read that right... only 2 out of 5 students in the LAUSD end up with a High School Diploma.

Schools shouldn’t be restaurants anyway, students should bring their own damn food.

I was way too skinny when I was in grade school and I only drank chocolate milk. In fact, my family made fun of me saying “you think you’re going into the Army and yet you’ll only drink chocolate milk”. Well I’ve never seen an Army mess hall that did not have both plain and chocolate milk.

What will the government do about the skinny kid problem? Are skinny ones the new oppressed minority?

More to the point, gov’t should not be paying for any food for the kids. Except in emergency, child neglect type cases.

And a high school diploma from LAUSD is utterly useless in 95% of cases anyway. The people can not compute, read, or write, and know NOTHING about the world. Exceptions exist for the few excellent students, but you can whip through LAUSD without much effort.

When I was in high school I was ‘skinny as a toothpick’. Everyday I went to the snack bar and had a large sugared soda, a candy bar, and a bag of chips. If I was in school now I would look horrible based on what they would allow me to eat.

But how many of them can read it?

No, apples or celery.

I would let them serve celery only if it was slathered with peanut butter!

I’d leave the candied-up milk and get rid of the candied-up bureacrats, lawyers and left-wing whackos who run LAUSD.

Have you tasted that bile? I have eaten the school lunch on Parent's Day at school. The milk is skim, ugh, blech. I would rather drink Liquid Paper. Chocolate doesn't help much.

BTW, very few of the kids drink it, gallons get thrown away every day. I predict that even fewer will drink it without the chocolate flavor. Why don't they go back to low fat (2%), or even whole milk?
