Gov. Brewer vetoed SB 1593, the Health Care Freedom Compact Act, which would have allowed out-of-state companies to write health-insurance policies in Arizona and waived Arizona’s 32 insurance mandates, which require insurers to cover a host of treatments and services.

More info in AZCentral article but can't post. I have to question whose side she is on. Has Obama threatened her?

I don’t blame her for this. A lot of governors would not want to mess with their own state’s Dept. of Insurance and all the laws that encompass their own state’s health insurance laws. It is a can of worms she probably did not want to open.

I have to question whose side she is on... Considering that those two prinicples lay at the core of health insurance reform I don't find that question of o line.

She wants to run for US Senate and it looks like the current US Senate RINOs have gotten a hold of her.

I have to question whose side she is on.

She's not a real conservative.

She pushed a State sales tax increase about 18 months ago.

She endorsed McCain against Hayworth in the 2010 Senate primary.

HMO and PPO health plans are not insurance. Since 75% of americans with health "plans" are not regulated by insurance laws, I kinda don't see the argument. Instead, it's showing that health care contracts(not insurance) have been written, issued, and performed just to get around state insurance laws. Those agencies are "protecting" fewer and fewer insurance products in healthcare every year.

HMO's and PPO's are NOT HEALTH INSURANCE! They are private contracts.

“Brewer says she vetoed the bill Thursday partly because of a provision added late in the legislative process. That provision would have allowed insurers licensed by Arizona to drop specific mandated coverage if an out-of-state company doesn’t provide the mandated coverage in a policy issued in Arizona.

Brewer also says she has concerns about whether Arizonans would have adequate recourses if mistreated by out-of-state insurers.”

And she vetoed the “birther bill” and came up with an excuse. I don’t trust her, but it doesn’t really matter because I don’t live in AZ.

The HMO Act of 1974, a bill written by Ted Kennedy & Co. specifically excludes Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO's and PPO's) from state insurance oversight rules.

Some states have claimed that those contracts are regulated by their State Insurance Regulators, but they are not. There is some give-n-take by the plans and the states as a compromise, but it's not insurance.

Brewer also says she has concerns about whether Arizonans would have adequate [recourse] if mistreated by out-of-state insurers.”

This is exactly right. There are reasons why states have insurance oversight bodies, and a big reason is that it helps ensure the financial stability of insurance companies and protects state residents from half-@ssed insurance companies that operate outside of any state oversight.

Currently, Arizona’s health insurance companies are a government-created cartel, shielded from out-of-state competition by protectionist legislation. Combined with heavy legislative coverage mandates, the result is higher premiums for health insurance plans, which then cause consumers on the margin to become uninsured.

Senate Bill 1593 would allow Arizona health insurance consumers to shop for regulated health insurance plans offered in other States. Unfortunately, Arizona’s health insurance companies are lobbying very hard to protect their cartel against the competition that would be unleashed by SB 1593.

“It provided grants and loans to provide, start, or expand a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO); removed certain state restrictions for federally qualified HMOs; and required employers with 25 or more employees to offer federally certified HMO options”

Why don’t people understand that part about removing certain state restrictions? (The HMO Act) This was the year and the first shot fired in the war of federal takeover of healthcare. The states have very limited oversight of HMO healthcare plans, if any at all.
