Why Birtherism Is Here To Stay
Townhall.com ^ | May 1, 2011 | Steve Chapman

On Oct. 22, 1844, thousands of followers of American evangelist William Miller woke up expecting Jesus Christ to make his triumphant return that day, as they had been told. That night, they went to bed, surprised and disappointed. But Miller's movement endured.

It was too much to expect that birthers, presented with President Barack Obama's birth certificate, would say: "What surprising and wonderful news! We'll have to reassess our entire opinion of him." When it comes to matters of blind faith, cherished beliefs have a way of overriding facts.

There has never been a shred of persuasive evidence that Obama was born anywhere but Hawaii. But thanks to rampant paranoia and widespread credulity, the myth of his foreign origins gained currency among many people who should know better.

A recent New York Times/CBS News poll found that 25 percent of Americans, including 45 percent of Republicans, do not believe Obama was born in America. A poll taken after the release of his birth certificate showed 18 percent of those who have seen it still aren't convinced.

Something about this president impels many people to accept anything that is said about him, as long as it's unfavorable. Twelve percent of Americans think he's a Muslim. Plenty of others believe things contradicted by his first two years in office -- that he's a radical leftist, an anti-gun fanatic, a disciple of world government and Darth Vader's delinquent nephew.

They even believe he's an inarticulate dunce who got into Ivy League schools only because of affirmative action and can't utter an intelligible sentence without a teleprompter. Never mind that he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School and taught at another premier university, the University of Chicago.

An idiot statement.

There has never been a shred of evidence I wasn't born in CA, but I've been forced to produce my BC hundreds of times.

"papers please" only applies to we, The Great Unwashed, not our "betters".

I'd like to point out that, unlike some of my betters, I am not a bastard.

Then they should stop calling us names and prove thei assertions

We say the document is fake- we give video proof on the actual document released.

The libtards say it is real - with no video proof, except examples of other unrelated things on other documents...

And who’s unhinged?

If we fail to follow the rule of law, the law becomes the mere passing whim of tyrannical despots!

Dual born citizens are NOT ELIGIBLE!

Son of Adolph, anyone? Son of Stalin? Son of Pol Pot? Son of Bin Laden?

Just because he's half honky, slave owning, polar bear, snowflake, cracker shouldn't be any reason to ignore the CONSTITUTION!

"There has never been a shred of persuasive evidence that Obama was born anywhere but Hawaii."

I like how the libtard media puts the conclusion right there for us too.. Every time they discuss the issue it sis always about how those crazy birthers wont believe the undisputed facts...

Well there is more proof he was born in Kenya than there is that he was born in USA, including he Grandma saying she was there at his birth, his wife giving a speech on video saying he was born in Kenya, his own political website when he was running for Senate saying he was born in Kenya, and 3 years of stonewalling and $2million dollars to prevent releasing a real BC that you and I have to do all the time.

The unhinged are the libtars with the blind faith in "The Annointed Won" who would never in a million years accept this kind of stuff from a Republican.

I like this issue for the full-scale exposure of what we all suspected- libtard media hypocracy.

Then where did Hillary Clinton get that idea?

I think I've produced mine twice in my lifetime. Once for a passport, and once for an initial application for DOD security clearance.

What have you done that requires you to produce your BC hundreds of times?

Sheeeyit. Just think what The Left would be saying about him if he was (were?) a Republican.

The Diversion Continues.

Even if Barry Soetoro aka Barack Hussein Obama had been birthed in the Lincoln Bedroom of the White House he is NOT a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN.

I’m more offended about this because they ‘produce’ a fake document and call us crazy... a good portion of FREEPERS call us crazy if we just don’t buy into it.

There are TOO many oddities about this document to NOT even question it.

Why are we flat out called ‘crazy’ if we even question it???

Maybe he was hatched by a buzzard but the point is that he has been foisted upon us by fawning, kneepad wearing presstitutes and that pisses me off!

The political and literary classes still don't understand the two major driving forces behind the “birther movement.”

First, the individuals have to show their birth certificates multiple times as they want to access services and join associations. If our children have to show valid birth certificates to go school and we have to show it to get passports, both minor things, which shouldn't Obama have to show his? Who has the greater ability to affect the greater number of people?

Second, much live the driving issue - almost everyone I have talked to would /did show their certified birth certificates when requested by authorities. We didn't have anything we were ashamed of. If Obama is who/what he says he is why didn't he do likewise? The only non-political excuse for his behavior on this subject is he either has something to hide or is ashamed of it.

The Founding Fathers did not intend such, but the American people did as a way of punishing themselves for the failures of GWB. They really did expect “hope and change”.

Shoot, I haven’t seen any really pursuasive evidence that he was BORN.

All we get is load of BS after load of BS.

So the newest load we are supposed to accept unquestioningly?

Yes, DISHONESTY is the point.

With 18 months to the election, it would be next to impossible to adjudicate Obama out.

But for political purposes, we should hammer, hammer, hammer away at all his lies, distortions, and downright, documentable fraud.

The people have a right to know.

If they want to a lying sack of Shiite to occupy the WH for another 4 years, they won’t be able to say we didn’t warn them.

his own political website when he was running for Senate saying he was born in Kenya

Never heard this. Any links or scrubbed already? Thanks for your support.

Plus Zero admitted as Senator and previously being born in Kenya with witness affidavits filed in court. Plus the Kenyan Ambassador's comments on radio station "his birthplace in Kenya is well known", plus a dozen African press links stating "Kenyan-born"

So-called birtherism is not here to stay. It will disappear once Obama leaves office. It is merely a means for some to try to discredit Obama. This sort of manufactured conspiratorial issue has become commonplace in our national dialogue ever since the Kennedy assassination, when many charlatans and snake oil salesmen found they could make a nice buck off books, TV specials, etc. They, uhmmm, “birthed” the cottage industry that today instantly manufactures conspiracy theories about many events and public figures. Just like millions love a good mystery, millions also love a good conspiracy.

Uh, maybe a "slight" exaggeration. But certainly more than twice. As I recall, we had to produce them to get our mortgage when we moved to KY 5 years ago. We had to produce them to get our driver licenses here, not copies, but originals. I remember as a kid we needed it, but I can't tell you the exact circumstances and my parents are gone so I can't get that info from them. We moved a lot as a military family, so that probably caused it to happen more than average.

I think it is telling that *I* needed it to get my DL, but *Obama* did not need it to be sworn in as President.
