WASHINGTON – Osama bin Laden, the glowering mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that murdered thousands of Americans, was killed in an operation led by the United States, President Barack Obama said Sunday.

"Justice has been done," said the president in a dramatic late-night announcement at the White House.

A small team of Americans killed bin Laden in a firefight Sunday at a compound in Pakistan, the president said, and took custody of his remains. American officials said they were being handled in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Hi, just saw this AP piece that says Osama bin Laden’s remains are being handled by the Obama administration according to Islamic tradition. They are giving OBL’s body respect. Yikes!!!

Obama will be celebrated and revered in the MSM for the next few weeks. Chris Mathews will get tingles in many many places as they praise Obama for getting Bin Laden.

A p*ssing contest will be set up, in which the liberals say that Bush wasn’t able to get Bin Laden, but that Obama was able to do so.

The MSM may say that this event will be Obama’s “Oklahoma City” moment. They tried hard to make Tucson his Oklahoma City but it didn’t work out as planned.

I wonder if Obama gets a bounce in the polls? We’ll see.

But having said that, of course I’m happy Bin Laden is dead. I hope he’s learning his eternal fate right about now,and that fate is not 72 virgins waiting for him.

We carried out a huge mission in Pakistan without their permission.

Pakistan is already ready to explode.

I am absolutely shocked that the Obama administration is according OBL's remains any degree of respect. I'm almost sick to my stomach at this news.

That’s not what is being reported by the WH. They said they had the cooperation of Pakistan.

All I know is there comes a time when the feelings and sensibilities of the American people MUST come first. As someone who grew up in Jersey City and New York City, I sure as heck do not want OBL's remains treated with any kind of respect.

Like many here tonight, I also want to see photographic proof. If "Islamic tradition" supposedly prevents that, I don't give a flying fig. I want incontrovertible proof of OBL's death made public. Then yes, burn his carcass and toss his ashes into the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean.

Only after we began the operation. Any chance of leaking info to the ISI was a no go.

We basically had permission, to leave.

According to a FReeper, the CIA insisted that Obama sign a non-disclosure agreement to protect the SEAL’s involved in the raid. Obama didn’t want to sign it. General Petreus insisted and Obama relented. Gen. Patreus is protecting our SEALs from 0bama.

I'm of two minds here.

First, I would like to see OBL's carcass strung up, head downward, on meathooks in a public square, and shot into ribbons using pig-fat dipped bullets, with the remaining shreds stomped into the dust and dirt by a herd of wild boars.

But on the other hand, that's the kind thing the evil savages who infest the Middle East would do. I would like to think that we more civilized people might well accord our enemies a measure of respect, because doing so proves that we are better than them.

Difficult call... the former is more soul-satisfying, while the latter takes the higher ground...

As much as it makes me sick that Usama bin Laden is being shown any respect, there might be an immediate need to stop a Jihadist retaliation on the US for Usama’s death. (By the way, didn’t media used to spell his name Osama? What gives with the sudden respelling??) Maybe reporting that the US is showing respect to Islam tradition is a way to win them over (but behind the scenes they are kicking his corpse).

I do not believe there is any way to influence what those insane maniacs do.

Whether we choose to respect or disrespect OBL's carcass, the Muslims will do what they always do -- riot, shoot, kill, etc. -- regardless.

Our decision should be based on what WE think is best, not on what the Muslim reaction might be.

This is pathetic and I am sick of kissing up to Muslims, of which our president is one. Muslim and Arab leaders all over the world are threatening the USA, and endorsing the slaughter of Christians and Jews on a daily basis. This is not an ending, this does not satisfy justice.

“Justice has been done.” That is the most ignorant statement of the day. This victory should be our rallying cry, “I have not yet begun to fight!”

I'm sure Our Pres--ent Obama will eventually show us what is purportedly OBL's "Death Certificate" (DC). Or maybe it will only be a "Certificate of Dead Passing" (CoDP). Signed in Hawaii, too, probably.

Will their be a "Deather" movement?

And we are expected to accept the words of a natural born liar that the “victim” is Osama bin Laden without any substantiating pictures, etc. Muslims strive to bury the deceased as soon as possible after death, avoiding the need for embalming or otherwise disturbing the body of the deceased. An autopsy may be performed, if necessary, but should be done with the utmost respect for the dead. So, if this is done the body will be “buried”...I want to see the pictures before I believe he is dead!

Anybody got a picture???

As far as I know, no pictures of OBL's corpse have been released. No proof of his death has been released. But I offer the following pictures, which I've never shared online before. I took these shots of the World Trade Center when I was a young person growing up in the NYC metro area.

This first one, circa 1970, is from the Jersey City shore looking across the Hudson at the Twin Towers under construction. North Tower is the one further along, I believe. You can also see the venerable old Woolworth Building in the left background. Nice contrast, because in its day, the Woolworth was the tallest building in the world.

Photobucket

Also circa 1970, I took this picture at dusk from the observation deck of the then tallest building in the world, the Empire State Building.

Photobucket

I took this shot from somewhere out in Port Jersey, July 4, 1976, the Bicentennial Celebration of the Declaration of Independence. The towers were complete, new, shiny and, in their own blocky way, beautiful.

Photobucket

It hurts my heart to look back and remember. I hate Islamofacists for what they did. Osama bin Laden deserves not the slightest modicum of respect in death. I spit on him and all his kind.

I see your point and I agree. But I am just so sick of our boys coming home in coffins or all crippled up that I really don’t give a rat’s a** how Osama’s body is treated. I’m just glad he’s dead. Two of my dearest firends have lost husbands in Iraq and why? Well, why is answered with Osama’s death but it’s OUR boys that matter lots more than Osama.

The spelling of his name was a long-running controversy. Right after 9/11, FoxNews used "Usama" and the rest "Osama".

At any rate, the murderous SOB finally got his comeuppance.

We do need to see photographic evidence, however. This Administration has not proven itself trustworthy on other matters.

Yes it is sad but I second the motion. I don’t believe a damn thing from this administration.

I will believe it when I see it and hear from the troops that shot the SOB. The troops I will trust. Until then I will consider this a campaign fund raiser.

There are still plenty of Saddam execution videos available on the internet.

I was living in Newark and used to look across and see the towers going up every day(’70-’71) then I got taken in THE LAST draft! Sworn in Dec 1, 1971. Six days later, Prez Nixon declared the end of the draft.

“Can I go home, then?” I stupidly asked my drill sergeant. That question cost me a lot of pushups.

What’s released for public consumption doesn’t necessarily reflect reality either. :)

You can bet your last dollar that the SEALs manhandling this meatbag into the chopper were not kind or gentle about it, and to add insult to injury, even if he is buried at sea with an imam’s blessing, it will be an American imam.

Osama is the Jordanian spelling, I’m not sure what Usama is.

To be technical, it's spelled أسامة بن محمد بن عوض بن لادن‎ (Arabic, not sure if it'll come through on all systems). There's not usually an easy "right" or "wrong" spelling when you're transliterating from a non-Roman alphabet. That's why most sources use Mao Tse-Tung but some use Mao Zhedong; why you have discrepancies like Bombay/Mumbai, Peking/Bejing, Calcutta/Kolkatta; and why no two news outlets have ever agreed on the spelling of Muammar Ghadafi.
