~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma

tinkerafbrelocation

Tinker Air Force Base is a major U.S. Air Force base located in Oklahoma City, near the suburb of Midwest City, Oklahoma. Tinker is the home of the Air Force Materiel Command Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center (OC-ALC) (FHZ) which is the worldwide manager for a wide range of aircraft, engines, missiles, software and avionics and accessories components. The host unit at Tinker is the 72d Air Base Wing (72 ABW) which provides services and support for the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center and its tenant organizations.

General Clarence L. Tinker (1887-1942) was an airman of Osage Indian ancestry who lost his life during World War II while on a combat mission during the Japanese attack on Midway Island in the Pacific, June 7, 1942. Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is named in his honor.

In the fall of 1906, Tinker enrolled at Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Missouri. Upon graduating from Wentworth in 1908 Tinker was commissioned a third lieutenant in the Philippine Constabulary.

He received his commission as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army infantry in March 1912. After infantry training, Tinker joined the Twenty-fifth Infantry Division at Fort George Wright in Spokane, Washington. During World War I, Tinker served in the Southwestern United States and California, and was promoted to Major.

In 1919, Tinker began flying lessons. Shortly thereafter, he transferred to the Army Air Corps, and on July 1, 1922, he was assigned to flight duty. In 1927, he was named Commandant of the Air Corps Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas. Tinker commanded various pursuit and bombardment units during the 1930's. He was steadily promoted, and on October 1, 1940, became a brigadier general.

After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Tinker was named Commander of the Air Forces in Hawaii to reorganize the air defenses of the islands. In January 1942, he was promoted to Major General, the First American Indian in U.S. Army history to attain that rank.

In June 1942, the Japanese began their assault of Midway Island. In the midst of the Battle of Midway, on June 7, General Tinker decided personally to lead a force of early model B-24s against the retreating Japanese naval forces. Near Midway Island his plane was seen to go out of control and plunge into the sea. General Tinker and eight crewmen perished. His body was never recovered.

Tinker Air Force Base has more than 26,000 military and civilian employees and is the largest single-site employer in Oklahoma. The installation covers 5,033 acres and has 760 buildings with a building floor space of over 15,200,000 square feet.

The 72nd Air Base Wing provides base installation and support services for the OC-ALC and 45 associate units assigned to six major commands, including the largest flying wing in Air Combat Command, the Navy's Strategic Communications Wing One and several defense agencies. More than 1,600 military personnel and 1,500 contractors work within the 72nd Air Base Wing.

I have fond memories of Tinker AFB. Years ago a dear friend was an instructor for the FAA. She took me through the base, and FAA HDQ at that time with no clearance except her word. Couldn’t do that now.
Had a great time. We brought a guy in full Darth Vader costume and the R2D2 droid( remotely controlled by me) through the offices. Classrooms emptied, took many pictures. The base personnel were great. I was nervous about being stopped and asked for papers.
Again- couldn’t do that now.

Never Alone
May 3, 2011

Having played intercollegiate soccer, I’ve never lost my love for “The Beautiful Game.” I especially enjoy watching the English Premier League. One reason is the skill and speed with which the game is played there. Also, I love the way the fans sing in support of their beloved “sides.” For instance, Liverpool has for years had “You’ll Never Walk Alone” as its theme. How moving to hear 50,000 fans rise as one to sing the lyrics of that old standard! It’s an encouragement to players and fans alike that together they will see each other through to the end. Walk alone? Never.

This sentiment has meaning for everyone. Because each of us is made for community, isolation and loneliness are among the most painful of human experiences. During painful times, our faith is vital.

The child of God never needs to fear abandonment. Even if people turn on us, friends forsake us, or circumstances separate us from loved ones, we are never alone. God has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5). This is not just a nice tune or clever lyrics offering an empty sentiment. It is the promise of God Himself to those who are the objects of His love. He is there—and He isn’t going away.

With Christ, you will never walk alone.

God’s unseen presence comforts me,
I know He’s always near;
And when life’s storms besiege my soul,
He says, “My child, don’t fear.” —D. De Haan

God’s presence with us is one of His greatest presents to us.

Read: Hebrews 13:1-8

Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” —Hebrews 13:5

Doing great, thanks!

I heard a lot of left-wing drivel from my young colleagues at work - I fear they're beyond saving. They way ppl are talking you'd think Ozero made the kill shot himself. I guess it will take awhile for the other shoe to drop - bad things are in the offing - you can be sure that the Islamists will exact revenge.

This just in from DesertCoyote...SandRat's daughter....

My mom, Mrs. SandRat went to visit him this morning and he was sitting in a chair! Yet another milestone in his recovery. They tried to get him started with rehabilitation and found very quickly that he can’t do it like he thought. Maybe tomorrow he’ll be able to get up and around on his own. Once he can do that, he will be discharged and able to go home.

Thanks, DC, for the update. Sand, one step at a time. ((HUGS))

Thank the Lord for our Troops - without them we'd be lost. My colleagues are in the category of useful idiots - those of them who are not suppurating leftists. I can hardly abide working with them, but in this economy - a consequence of their benighted leader - I just keep quiet and don't talk politics.
