Opinion: Bin Laden assassinated not martyred (Does this make the rookie Hussein a war criminal?)

Opinion: Bin Laden assassinated not martyred
By Parag Khanna, Special to CNN
May 2, 2011 12:34 p.m. EDT

In the decade since 9/11, many senior al Qaeda leaders and operatives have been killed in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and elsewhere, yet still all of these countries remain fragile at best and collapsed at worst.

For Osama bin Laden's assassination to become a turning point rather than a Pyrrhic victory, the narrative of the event must be dramatically shifted away from rhetorical overtones about a "war of ideas" or "struggle for soul of Islam" towards a more neutral and universal appeal to a global rule of law.

President Obama set the right tone with his statement on Sunday evening that the "United States is not -- and never will be -- at war with Islam. ... Bin Laden was not a Muslim leader. He was a mass murderer of Muslims." For his criminal atrocities, bin Laden was assassinated, not martyred.

That it was American counterterrorism operatives who conducted the assassination on the sovereign soil of a foreign country is an even more important marker. Many see the assassination of rogue individuals as a violation of sovereign immunity and even "playing God," a right that no nation can arrogate to itself. This is false. It is a powerful symbol of our collective evolution that individual perpetrators are targeted for their crimes rather than entire societies punished in wars.

Just try a Yahoo News search for 'war criminal' and you'll find that Dubya has his own hot link. The looney left have been on this kick for about, oh, eight years - maybe more. Does the same deal apply to the rookie Hussein? Libya wasn't Dubya's deal at all. We'll have to see what happens. Just a few examples -

That has been constantly on my mind for the last day or so - this "illegal war" and "war criminal" Bush started all of this but suddenly it is wonderful and just that bammy killed the man in the dark of night? I support the assassination, but think the left can't have it both ways - their guy the hero but our guy a war criminal.

Someone needs to alert those whores on The View that they were calling President Bush a thug and criminal for the very actions that garnered the intelligence for the military to find bin laden and obama to take the credit for his kill.

So what happens when a foreign government kills one of our congressman or senators that they don’t like?

The Bin Laden kill for all it’s symbolism and “justice” sets us on a slippery slope of international “justice” and weakened sovereignty. If we can cross any border and openly kill people at will, what stops others from returning the favor?

It is illegal for any American government apparatus to “assassinate” in a premeditated manner.

We are permitted to “capture” enemy combatants and criminals and deliver their person to trial.

We are permitted the lawful mechanism for legitimate law enforcement or military personnel to execute the use of deadly force if the target party resists with such deadly force as to threaten the life of those enforcing legitimate rule of law.

It sounds complicated, but it is in fact a very simple thing.

I don’t consider it an “assassination” but a kill. He was not a political leader but a paramilitary commander. It hasn’t been uncommon to target military leaders, command and control has long been a legitimate target.

At what point does assination actually become execution.

The execution of a death warrant is not assassination. Likewise the death of Admiral Yamamoto by P 38 was killing of an enemy commander by military order.

The death of Osama was not an assassination. The death was the result of the execution of a military order

“So what happens when a foreign government kills one of our congressman or senators that they don’t like?”

Those remaining order the most powerful military in the world to destroy that government.

When one country merely protected the organizer of 9/11, we responded by taking out it’s government and took out another dictator just because we were so pissed off.

“what stops others from returning the favor?”

Awesome firepower.

At base, all society is built upon an understanding of who can beat the crap out of who else. Everyone follows rules because it is, on the whole, more comfortable and productive to adhere to agreements rather than fight. Sometimes, however, someone gets out of hand and we have to return to basics.

The “no assassinations” mantra is, on the whole, for the benefit of those at the top - professional courtesy, a la sharks and lawyers.

Pakistan has nukes.

Based on your argument, they should nuke DC if they are unhappy with our violation of their sovereignty.

Just playing devil’s advocate. Either the Obama admin is deserving of a whole lot more credit for negotiating a quiet deal on Bin Laden, or we’re potentially opening ourselves up to a serious pushback.

Just as the American revolution proved, the biggest, baddest military with the fanciest tools doesn’t guarantee absolute protection. A modicum of restraint can go a long way as well.

It is indeed valid to target and kill, in a premeditated manner, one who has derived a position of opposition to ones being.
