Panetta said that bin Laden made "some threatening moves that were made that clearly represented a clear threat to our guys. And that's the reason they fired."
The SEALs were back in the U.S. at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington for debriefing on the raid, lawmakers said after meeting with Panetta.
The question of how to present bin Laden's death to the world is a difficult balancing act for the White House. President Barack Obama told Americans that justice had been done, but the White House also declared that bin Laden's body was treated respectfully and sent to rest in a somber ceremony at sea.
Panetta underscored on Tuesday that Obama had given permission to kill the terror leader: "The authority here was to kill bin Laden," he said. "And obviously, under the rules of engagement, if he had in fact thrown up his hands, surrendered and didn't appear to be representing any kind of threat, then they were to capture him. But they had full authority to kill him."
For the long-term legacy of the most successful counterterrorism operation in U.S. history, the fact that bin Laden was unarmed is unlikely to matter much to the Americans he declared war against. President George W. Bush famously said he wanted bin Laden "dead or alive," and the CIA's top counterterrorism official once promised to bring bin Laden's head back on a stake.

Uh yeah, so were 3000 beautiful Americans on 911.
That would have been the smart thing to do.
Ok they weren’t all Americans but you know what I mean.
So where’s the stake?
Didn’t take Obama and his White House rats to throw the SEALs under the bus, did it?
Why am I NOT surprised???
OBL could have turned himself in.
Panetta is not with the White House. He’s director of the CIA. Many SEALS join CIA. Many CIA were once SEALS. Obama is an habitual bus-thrower. But an intelligence agency ought to have at least some internal loyalty.
“The authority here was to kill bin Laden,” he said. “And obviously, under the rules of engagement, if he had in fact thrown up his hands, surrendered and didn’t appear to be representing any kind of threat, then they were to capture him. But they had full authority to kill him.”
To this day they still attribute this western ideal to them about surrendering with their hands up.
They still don’t understand that these people often wear suicide vests and blow themselves up?
It would be bad enough for your average Joe to talk like that, but head of the CIA?
What about those CIA people blown up at a Birthday party?
How long does it take to gain a clue?
didnt they have live feed as the operation was happening so how come there so many conflicting reports. Some couldn’t stop themselves from lying?
They were so eager to get the news out, they forgot to synchronize lies before going public.
The WH staff was in the ‘situation room’ watching direct helmet-cam live-time video.
ALL of the details have come through the WH/SofS. The amount of misinformation released is both astounding and simply not understandable.
The only consistency is the bravery and training of our troops.
No wonder there was no poll bounce for Zero.
Worse yet, to the black community the conflicting accounts sound like a replay of so many controversial cop shootings, a meme exploited by the left to divide Amerticans. I’m convinced that this mixed message is a deliberate political effort by the Chicago thugs.
When did he do that? I haven’t heard anything like that from the WH.
The question of how to present bin Laden’s death to the world is a difficult balancing act for the White House.
Hey world. We killed an evil murdering piece of shit terrorist. You are welcome.
Hmm... I’m having a tough time believing he wasn’t armed. Our guys didn’t drift quietly in through his bedroom window on dandelion seeds. They rappelled down from noisy helicopters, blew doors open and got into a firefight on the ground floor before making their way up to bin Laden’s room. I thought he always kept a gun nearby so what the heck? He had to have heard them coming and he had more than enough time to arm himself.
It’s getting worse: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110504/wl_nm/us_binladen_legitimacy
Obama’s going to wind up putting the Seals on trial for murder... that’s my guess.
