Daniels Signs Sweeping Education Reform Bills

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Mitch Daniels signed the nation's broadest private school voucher system into law Thursday, part of sweeping education reforms he championed that won approval in the Indiana Legislature.

Lawmakers and supporters joined Daniels at a Statehouse ceremony where he signed the voucher bill and another proposal aimed at expanding charter schools, which are public schools free of many state regulations.

The controversial voucher program would allow even middle-class families to use taxpayer money to send their children to private and religious schools.

Unlike other systems that are limited to lower-income households, children with special needs or those in failing schools, Indiana's voucher program will be open to a much larger pool of students, including those already in excellent schools.

There is a way to immediately shrink the number of students in government schools and thereby immediately reduce state school budgets:

1) Turn all team sports ( cheer leading, etc.), music, art, and theater programs over to the county departments of recreation. Many children attend school because the government schools have a head lock monopoly on the farm team or minor league sports that lead to the big leagues. A better move would be to privatize all sports, music, art, and theater by giving the child a voucher for these activities and completely eliminate these activities from the school curriculum.

2) Allow any child of any age to take the GED or a similar private exam. If they pass they would be awarded an official state high school diploma from their local government high school. With the official high school diploma they would be eligible for post high school scholarships and loans. There would be no discrimination against them if they choose to join the military.

3) Allow qualifying exams starting in first grade. If a child passes a qualifying exam and proves mastery of the subject, he would be immediately promoted to the next level in that specific subject. Much of the material could be available on-line with the courses being taught by the world's best teachers. The material could even be free if the producer accepted advertising.

Therefore.....

The more quickly a child moves through the system the fewer school employees and buildings that would be needed. There would be a tremendous reduction in the cost of pensions. Qualifying exams encourage parents and children to take responsibility for their own educations and help them to develop self-sufficiency. Also, it would promote a cottage industry of tutoring.

If states really wanted to encourage children to finish their schooling, they could award a scholarship for each year that they finished early. The scholarship could be 1/4 of the cost of keeping them in the government school. The scholarship could be used at any time in their lives for post high school education or training in a trade.

Watch all the youtube video’s you need to watch. Gather all the information that you can about Daniels. Join his campaign if he runs.

However, that won’t change the fact that Daniels will NEVER be the GOP nominee.

“He didn’t “surrender”...he just said he wasn’t prepared yet to debate.”

He’s seen Obama in action for 2+ years, he’s the governor of IN and worked in the Bush White House. He’s decided he wants to run for President and has the support of many (albeit in the establishment), yet he can’t debate a community organizer who has never held a real job and has failed in ALL foreign relations decisions, except in existing in which he has followed to a T?

Saying he surrendered isn’t “hyperbolic” it’s diplomatic.

Why? Because he’s short? That’s silly. Some people are fairly shallow I will grant you that. But a short person can be elected president - I have no doubt about that. I am more concerned about the candidates views on policy than their height. Good grief.

yet he can’t debate a community organizer

When you debate a socialist president (regardless of his low-life past) you are not just debating an individual. You are debating the entire far-left wing MSM and ivory-tower intellectual community.

Anything Daniels says will be jumped on like flies on honey and torn apart, parsed and twisted beyond recognition (kind of like some of Daniels' quotes). I don't blame him for not being quite ready, especially since he hasn't even announced for Pres...why would he be ready?

Daniels' conservative accomplishments as Governor are mitigated, yet 5-word statements are turned into soundbytes over and over again and the right eats it up. Ridiculous.

He needs to stop “pussy-footing” around. No matter though, I’ve already crossed him off my list. I’m only voting for a combative conservative this time around

He does not appeal to most conservatives and that is the group who vote in primaries, with the exception of a couple of state who have open primaries. That is the reason he won’t be the nominee.

Daniels has been able to achieve some fairly major conservative accomplishments in IN. He's DOING.

Amazing how FReepers are ignoring this and focusing on the verbal soundbytes the MSM delivers.

I thought FReepers were interested in getting things accomplished...I'm beginning to think they want a show instead.

“Daniels has been able to achieve some fairly major conservative accomplishments in IN.”

“So tonight I propose one more step that I would rather not propose. I ask the most fortunate among us, those citizens earning over $100,000 per year, for one year, to pay an additional one percent on the income they receive.”
— Mitch Daniels

Ok. Your original post focused on his height. Daniels is not perfect but he is more conservative than huck, newt or romney. I’d prefer some better myself and not pushing this guy. but right now the pickings are slim.

Yeah, but he signed the bill without insulting any public teachers' union officials or public school bureaucrats. That proves he's a no-good elitist RINO!!!
