In January 2010, more than 130 people gathered to celebrate the opening of Room B-28, a hacker space in the basement of the computer science building at Boston University. The room had two rows of computers running open-source software, and, in conformity to the hacker ethic, its walls were painted with wildly colored murals, extensions of the free expression to be practiced there. That was the reason for the power tools, too in case someone wanted to build something amazing and beautiful, such as the musical staircase, under construction now, that chimes when you step on it.
One of the visitors was a young Army specialist named Bradley Manning, on leave from duty in Iraq. He had been working with computers, modifying code, since he was a kid. David House, founder of the hacker space, said he immediately sensed that Manning was in the community, someone who understood how technology could be empowering. This was the sort of world Manning hoped to inhabit one day, friends said. He had joined the Army so the GI Bill would finance his education. He had his eye on a PhD in physics.

Army specialists start at E-4. This puke is an E-2 now. What a career path! How the hell did he keep a security clearance?
Michael Moore is worried about his allegedly harsh treatment in jail. I just love it when Michael Moore “weighs in” on a topic!
I still think the kid is fall guy
I don’t mean to be harsh but
Bradly Manning is a traitorous faggot who deserves to be executed by firing squad.
This sad pathetic little clown is the Major Hassan of military intelligence.
Two of my son’s friends used me as a reference to get security clearance for Embassy Guard duty for USMC. On both occasions, someone came out and interviewed me in person, gave me EVERY opportunity to comment as to any concerns about the stability or background of the young men. I do not see how they could have cleared him for security based on the many troubling events and behaviors in his past.
Leave him alone with his own brain and his own personality.
I can't imagine a worse punishment.
Yes — what a nut!
Trouble was, he was a bright nut, well taught in a home school of dysfunction, and he’d almost instinctively know how to buffalo through the screening.
Still what he did was hardly involuntary like the “stopping and staring” seizures. The armed services had concrete expectations of him as a custodian of confidential and secret data, and he chose to fall afoul of them for the sake of his philosophies. He should hardly be surprised to be slapped on the wrist or worse, quibbles and allegations about how he’s being kept now quite aside.
The son’s friend got to choose you — you weren’t chosen by the services. I’d think Manning knew who would give him a glowing review.
The unit personnel that had responsibility for security of the network failed to do their job, the official said. It was flat-out apathy and a failure of the chain of command".
Silly question, but why aren't the people who were supposed to be taking care of these issues sharing a cell next to Manning???
Oh wait - - the Democrats already did that just a few months ago.
Congratulations, America, on your "historic" election of President Obama.
So our colleges teach and provide space for hacking?
Never mind - move along
I've been asking this question since it began:
Why wasn't Manning's Company Commander court-martialed ?
He facilitated Manning by not enforcing the regulations at the SCIF.
Clearly the CO did not heed the First Sargent.
Most disturbing thing I gleaned was the casual attitude on the physical security of our assets; such as allowing CD players to be brought to work stations and negligence in rigorous checking of the logs.
Bradley needs some cellmates at Leavenworth - some of whom have brass on their shoulders.
I have seizure disorder, and at times I have just blanked out- not losing consciousness, but not being “there,” either. I am unable to respond to others or hear and often drop things- and that is when I know what happened, after I hear people asking if I am all right. NOT saying Manning has a seizure problem, but he very well could have a problem that he he is not in control of. He also could just be mentally ill, or a jerk, among other things.
