CIA watched bin Laden from nearby safe house inside Pakistan By Augustine Anthony and Michelle Nichols Fri May 6, 1:44 am ET
ABBOTTABAD/NEW YORK (Reuters) Extensive surveillance of Osama bin Laden's hideout from a nearby CIA safe house in Abbottabad led to his killing in a Navy SEAL operation, U.S. officials said, a revelation likely to further embarrass Pakistan's spy agency and strain ties.
The U.S. officials, quoted by the Washington Post, said the safe house was the base for intelligence gathering that began after bin Laden's compound was discovered last August, and which was so exhaustive the CIA asked Congress to reallocate tens of millions of dollars to fund it.
"The CIA's job was to find and fix," the Post quoted one U.S. official as saying, using special forces terminology for locating a target. "The intelligence work was as complete as it was going to be, and it was the military's turn to finish the target."
U.S. officials told the New York Times that intelligence gathered from computer files and documents seized at his compound showed bin Laden had for years orchestrated al Qaeda attacks from the Pakistani town, and may have been planning a strike on the U.S. rail sector this year, the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.

I wonder if Harry Reid and the rail sector are joyously relieved of these military operations, which apparently saved their programs from AlQuada assault.
If there was ever a doubt that Obama is determined to destroy the Republic, they are being removed by his handing of the Osama op.
To quote Mark Levin, “Just stop.”
One must ask why that day was he took out? Is UE going back up and Obama knew it? Was he wanting to continue to just watch him on into 2012?
Well, I guess it’s not a safe house anymore.
Has anyone read from a reliable source how long our intelligence knew OBL as in this compound?
Can anyone at all STFU back there? JHC, this is ridiculous!
This does harm to our methods. Does harm to our relations with Pakistan. Puts our nation at risk the next time.
We’ve got the U.N., the Human Rights Commission, the I.C.C., ABC, the Washington Post and probably a line-up a mile long with other entities trying to make us look like a pariah nation, and our officials couldn’t keep a secret if their two year old daughter’s life depended on it.
We’ve got the “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up” administration, and it’s getting worse by the day.
Put a sock in it. Then Zip-it you dumb asses!
I guess the Pakistan leadership and the ISI was protecting our troops in the safe house too...
Remember how the press complained that the Bush admin. was so "secretive"?
The leaks are going to keep coming because the Administration, Politicians and their aides are beating each other to the press with more salacious details by the day.
Too many people have access to information then.
This president has taken what could have been a feather in his cap, and has given it to others to sharpen and stab in his back.
It humiliates the U.S. in the process, so it’s not a lose/lose for the jerk.
I wonder what the odds are, him admitting we committed a crime against humanity here, just to rip this nation apart.
I do remember that BTW.
Golly, I sure hope them spooks registered as a spy site with the local clerk’s office in Abbott&Costellabad. What do you suppose a certificate of occupancy for that costs, in a garrison town in Pakistan?
I’m already seeing statements to that effect from some extreme Leftists. Even the other nominal leftists think they are insane. I think if Obama made such a statement, it would be an eye-opening moment for many who have stuck with him on the Left.
I don’t know. I’m thinking they may have taken a pass on that. I do like the inclusion of the suburb they lived in, Abbott&Costellabad.
Well, the nation gave the guy enough rope, and he sure didn’t disappoint.
Just days ago he was being lauded even by the Left.
Now he’s got just about everyone wondering if he can old it together for another week.
With every WH twist and turn, with all the data unnecessarily released, with overstatement upon overstatement...etc., the terrorists will turn the whole thing to their advantage.

Within hours we hear about a "treasure trove" of info and it's coming at us fast and furious. Think this is by accident? Keeping this front and center is all about 2012.
Clearly not and I wish they would!
A paper pusher at CIA wants public recognition. Professionals would prefer quiet credit, just in the very small circle of those with a need to know. My guess is that no one at DU, Kos, or MSNBC is in that circle and that at most one or two (probably zero) on FR are in that circle - and if they exist here, they wouldn’t even hint that they knew.
WHY are we telling them how we did this? This might also help them to track down who tracked Osama. They need to shut up. Obama’s Victory Tour must end.
Osama’s whereabouts were known for how many years?
A safe house in the neighborhood?
Somebody wanted a big toodoo for lots of publicity rather than one sniper in and out in a day or so.
Obama missed that opportunity because he is the one who said "yes". We all know how these people would have reacted if we could have killed him when Bush was in office.
I never would have imagined that killing Bin Laden would have turned so political the day after 9/11. I was so naive to believe that that was one subject the 'Rats would never dare politicize. But they started a month afterwords and it has been.....disgusting. (for lack of a better description.
I totally agree with your first post, BTW. 100%.
We said the same thing when we caught Hussein and killed Zarqawi in Iraq.
But the difference is that we didn't have to worry that the details of what that "treasure trove" were would leak out of the WH. We need to worry now.
Thanks SubmarinersWife. I’m going to have to tell you that I think Obama would actually take the heat if he could get the U. S. downgraded in the process.
I don’t think your logic is faulty at all, but this guy is not your conventional wisdom sort of guy either.
I appreciate your reasoned comments. You may be right. I just think he’s looking for any way possible to stop the dominance of the United States on the global stage.
Theres always interesting opposite events occurring, hmm!
