WASHINGTON — After reviewing computer files and documents seized at the compound where Osama bin Laden was killed, American intelligence analysts have concluded that the chief of Al Qaeda played a direct role for years in plotting terror attacks from his hide-out in Abbottabad, Pakistan, United States officials said Thursday.
The C.I.A. had Bin Laden’s compound under surveillance for months before American commandos killed him in an assault on Monday, watching and photographing residents and visitors from a rented house nearby, according to several officials briefed on the operation.

I’m calling BS on that - The notion he was much more than a figure head does not fly with the reality of actual Intel of what boots on the ground (throughout the ME) have found.

My personal thinking is that we’ve known he was there for years and have been paying the Pakis to hold him while allowing him to run the show as we intercepted everything to come out of the compound. It ain’t pretty but intell gathering seldom is.
What worries me is that Obama may have doublecrossed the pakis to save his own ego.
Ah, actually pretty well. While al Qaeda didn't have any successful attacks on US soil, there were plenty active other places - well more than a dozen, and that's entirely ignoring what they were doing in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Madrid train bombing for example was in (I think) 2004.
By almost any measure, al Qaeda has been fairly active the last 7-years.
And that BC business was just another diversion from the real biggie out there -- Eric Holder's scandalous Mexican gunrunning operation. I believe that one might turn out to be truly hugh and series.
IMHO, Panetta is the only one who comes out of this deal looking better than before.
Some rumors say Panetta made the decision to proceed while O thought about it for 16 hrs.
I am wondering if they are bumping up Panetta so he can take over the Biden spot on the ticket.
Panetta might just have the wisdom to resign after this.
