Wisconsin Budget Panel Votes To Cut Arts Funding 66 Percent (Dems: "cynical attack on the arts")

MADISON, Wis. -- The Legislature's budget-writing committee has voted to cut state funding for the arts by 66 percent.

Gov. Scott Walker had proposed cutting funding for the Wisconsin Arts Board by 73 percent. The Joint Finance Committee voted Thursday to restore about $350,000 of the cut with taxpayer money if federal matching funds are available.

Total money for the arts would drop from $1.6 million a year to $535,000.

The committee also agreed with Walker's recommendation that the independent board be made a part of the state Tourism Department.

Democrats railed against the proposal, saying there was no justification for the deep cut. Sen. Bob Jauch of Poplar called it a "cynical attack on the arts."

There is no money. None.

That means a lot of sacred cows will be made into burger on both sides of the isle. Including defense spending.

I would rather they cut 100 percent to the arts programs. That is an extracurricular activity and should be paid by the parents.....same as the sports too.

More likely, it’s funding public “art”. Mostly crapola.

Don't be absurd.

That's what overburdened taxpayers in a debt-laden state are for...

“.....What does this mean?

* The Arts Board will transfer to the Department of Tourism as of the start of the new fiscal year, 7-1-2011.

* The Board will retain the ability to hire/fire its Executive Director, giving it a measure of independence within the Department of tourism.

* After 30+ years, the Percent-for-Art program will cease to function as of 7-1-2011. It’s unclear what will happen to the several projects already in process.

* 4 program administrators will be retained as staff to the Arts Board. Six staff members will lose their jobs with the Arts Board.

* There will be additional monies available for grants and services - the potential of $350,000 additional funds annually provided by the state and by the National Endowment for the Arts....”

The other day, one of my youngins snatched something from another child. I told her that she should have asked. She said “I would have, but I knew she wouldn’t give it to me if I just asked.”

I told her that with that attitude, she’d grow up to be a democrat.

She looked at me in horror and said “I’ll NEVER do that!”

That’s what I thought as well.

There’s a big difference between “art programs” (in schools) and “the arts” which are basically funding crap that people won’t pay for voluntarily.

If the Republicans would expose “the arts” and make the public aware of the garbage they are paying for, this is a win for Pubs....

The government had no Constitutional authority to fund the arts to begin with.

Now that’s the real truth of the matter. Just where in Wisconsin State Constitution does it say that it’s the government’s responsibility to “fund the Arts?” From the look of things, I’d have to say that the Legislature actually let Governor Walker down by adding back some of the cut funding.

I agree. GOP should put more publicity into what our money is going for. They should say that, because we put money into crap like that, we risk having old people not be fed or get their medicines. Would you rather that Grandma can LIVE or that we spend $250,000 on some junk sculpture piece to go downtown where the birds will crap on it, causing it to need to be refinished 3 years from now?
