Leopard Attacks Child At Sedgwick County Zoo
KAKE News, Wichita, KS ^ | May 6, 2011 | KAKE News

A 7-year-old boy is hospitalized after being attacked by a leopard at the Sedgwick County Zoo.

Dispatchers said the call came in just before 1:30.

Zoo officials said the boy climbed a guardrail to get closer to the leopard cage. The leopard was able to reach the child with both of its paws, injuring the boy on his neck. The boy suffered wounds on his neck and face.

The zoo official said people riding the zoo tram saw the attack, jumped off and scared the leopard away.

Via Christi on St. Francis reports that the child is now in fair condition.

Zoo officials do have the animal under control.

All zoo visitors have been asked to move to the front entrance as authorities investigate the incident. KAKE'S Deb Farris said the zoo remains open.

According to a USD 259 spokesperson, the student was from Linwood Elementary School.

Sorry for this little boy but shouldn’t SOMEONE have been watching him climb a guard rail and enter a restricted area?

Leopards have killed more people than any other feline including lions and tigers.

For the 7-year-old boy, I have some sympathy.

For the woman in Germany? No sympathy. None.

WATCHING him climb a guard rail? I know what you’re saying, but someone should have grabbed him and pulled him away from the guard rail. Probably afraid of being charged with sexual battery/s

Leopards have killed more people than any other feline including lions and tigers.

Since well before people were people.

A fear reaction to leopard spots is programmed into our genes.

“... someone should have grabbed him and pulled him away..”

I am that type of person. I would have grabbed him by the shirt, hair, whatever I could have reached and dealt with law enforcement later. A seven year old may be too young to understand fully that (although beautiful), a leopard is a wild animal and not a big, purring house cat. Eeek.

The guilty kitty.

I have taken kids to the zoo many times, and my rule is simple: Anyone in the "pet the kitty" age bracket needs to be watched constantly.

Leopards have killed more people than the accident at Three Mile island, too.

As everyone knows, some ambulance chasing attorney will literally pounce on the parents of this kid faster than any leopard can move. If I was the leader/chairman of the zoo, I would sue the parents for not taking care of the kid better. The county or the state should go after the parents for child endangerment and/or child neglect for not watching their kids better.
But of course I know what will happen. The attorney will lie to the parents about the zoo not having safety at the foremost of their minds, the zoo not having enough personnel watching their kid while they were probably drinking an alcoholic beverage on a park bench only 3/4s of a mile away from their child and the zoo should pay for all medical bills plus pain and suffering for the parents having to deal with an attorney.
Just my opinion, of course.

Wow. Child should have been better monitored, I’m surprised there was a guardrail a 7 year old could get over where he could be accessed by a leopard, just a couple of things that seem a little stupid here. But prayers for the child. I hope he gets better soon.

I spent time doing field work in Namibia. Lions can pretty scary, but in the wild with a leopard, you probably wouldn’t know what hit you. During my times there two people have been killed by lions (Japanese tourists), one by hyena (Danish tourist), one by crocodile (researcher on break), and who knows how many of snakes - I don’t envy any of them - I can think of two murders as well.

I think all that ended when Ursula Andress started wearing leopard print;)

And I sit here thinking of all the cool photos you got while there (and no, not of people getting killed, just the wildlife).
