The Holland America liner, the Oosterdam, which makes regular cruises to the Mexican Riviera, will no longer sail out of San Diego after April 2012.Regular voyages to the Mexican Riviera, long a mainstay of San Diegos cruise ship business, are likely to end by the fall of 2012 with the decision by Holland America to move one of its key liners to Australia.
The cruise lines 1,926-passenger Oosterdam and the 2,500-passenger Carnival Spirit are the only two vessels that currently head to the Mexican Riviera on a regular basis, and both are now scheduled to leave San Diego after April of 2012. The Spirit as well will be relocated to Australia.
While the fall 2012-2013 schedules for the cruise lines have yet to be finalized, Port of San Diego official Rita Vandergaw acknowledged that for now it appears that San Diego will no longer have regular cruises to the Riviera.
The redeployment of the Oosterdam, which makes seven-day cruises to Mexico, marks the third ship to leave San Diego waters in the wake of a prolonged economic downturn and rising violence in Mexico. The net effect has been a plunge in cruise ship calls, which are an important component of San Diegos tourism economy.

Honduras and Dominica ARE dicey. I’ve never seen such poverty. Kids were coming up to us, asking to drink the cans of soda we were already drinking. Imagine wanting to drink a complete stranger’s backwash. Our tour bus broke down when we were in a slum in Venezuela. I was scared poopless.
I was on a Mexican Riviera cruise on the Carnival Spirit back in March. Prior to departure, all passengers were advised of safety problems at one port, Mazatlan and another port was canceled out right, Ensenada. Carnival tried to make it right with 2 stops at Cabo San Lucas (a smaller Cozumel) and a true crap hole, Manzanillo. Manzanillo reminded me a bit of the movie Blackhawk Down, in that the military was riding around, fully armed, on pick up trucks. As a veteran, I had no problem with them, especially after talking to them but a large number of passengers were frightened. I still had a good time at Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, and La Paz.
It ain’t the port fees (which they can pass on for the most part) it is the major fear of the drug cartel violence.
I deal with CCL almost every day and they are very worried about it (them and every other vessel operator).

They have a 7 day from Long Beach to Mexico for $469.
My wife & I got an 11 day Hawaii cruise several years ago for $599 each through this website.
Good riddance.... We don’t need anymore amusement parks, floating or otherwise.
Not only that, few people left in the private sector have the money to go on cruises...Most of those people are all dying out.
just curious
are you shorting cruise line stocks?
It's what happens when the economy collapses resulting in tens of millions out of jobs, so this shouldn't come as a big surprise.
The battle for Los Angeles is already lost. Los Angeles is Mexican teritory in everything but name only.
Government troops, or the local warlord's?

Why travel to Mexico?
The U.S.A. is full of beautiful, fun, marvelous things to see and do.
“The U.S.A. is full of beautiful, marvelous, fun things to do”
Ding! Ding! Ding! Folks, we have a winner!
Full disclosure: my wife and I remembered Acapulco and Cancun when they were cheap, fun, and safe.
BTW, anyone recall the “See America First” campaign?
They were Mexican army. They, and the Mexican Navy personnel that were at every port gave me a sense of security. But it also gave me pause that some places are dangerous. Still, these folks would even pose with you for photos.
I got an upgrade to the Owner’s Suite, over 900 square feet with a separate living and sleeping area and a deck overlooking Lido for 5K. Wanted to live large once before going back to a way smaller balcony suite at 800/person.
It Must Be Nice!
Or, as The Great One used to say,
“How Sweet It Is!”
;-)
Mark Levin said that?
If you join the Navy, they may send you on one for free. :=)
