President Barack Obama gave the go-ahead for U.S. forces to raid a northern Pakistan housing compound based on "what was probably a 50-50 chance that Osama bin Laden was there," his national security adviser said.
"At the end of last year, we assessed that al Qaeda had been diminished ... to its weakest since 2001," said the security adviser...
On April 28, Obama attended the last of several National Security Council meetings focused on finding and going after the al Qaeda leader. During that meeting, some advocated for the commando raid while others advised against it, Donilon said, given there had been no clear-cut sightings of bin Laden by that point.

Listening to 0 on 60 Minutes right now. He started the interview using “I” over and over. Then he switched to “we.” I’m guessing the interview was stopped and he was told to stop using “I” for every comment....
Until I see photo of OBL looking pretty dead I’m not buying this deal.

Did we ever get confirmation that bin Laden was seen ‘walking in his courtyard’? If that report is true then there were photographs.
And I have a hard time believing that bin Laden never ventured outside.
Even the satellite photos would be good enough (I’m betting) to capture enough info to beat the 50/50 odds. Shadow length would give an accurate height measurement for example.
Bottom line: I don’t buy the 50/50. Propaganda.
I think Pakistan knew, there’s no way USA would send 3 dozen soldiers near their West Point. Even if the helicopters sneaked in, once bullets start flying it doesn’t take much for their military academy to mobilize. Not to mention that people heard the helicopters from quite far (tweeted about it too).
They mean gutsy in the sense that it could gone completely wrong...dead soldiers being dragged by bearded jihadists, escaped OBL, empty location or a mixture. Whether by chance or a soldier making any mistake, Obama would have paid for it in public opinion and votes.
Propaganda to make Obama's decision look more bold than it was.
There's always a 50-50 chance because a thing is either true or not true.
At this point I’d say that it’s 50-50 proposition whether anything the Obama faction says is a lie or a damned lie.
This is all political theater.
I'm surprised we didn't bounce microwaves off the compound windows to pick up the conversations inside the compound structure...oh well, what do I know?...
