Navy Will Perform Same-Sex Marriages
Mother Jones ^ | May 9th 2011 | Adam Weinstein

Posted on 05/09/2011 2:37:20 PM PDT by YankeeReb

The military establishment, it appears, is willing to drag congressional Republicans kicking and screaming into the post-Don't Ask, Don't Tell era. The US Navy has authorized its chaplains to perform same-sex marriages on military bases in states that legally recognize such unions. That news came in a memo from the service's head chaplain (PDF), dated April 13:

Consistent with the tenets of his or her religious organization, a chaplain may officiate a same-sex, civil marriage: if it is conducted in accordance with a state that permits same-sex marriage or union; and if that chaplain is, according to the applicable state and local laws, otherwise fully certified to officiate that state’s marriages...if the base is located in a state where same-sex marriage is legal, then base facilities may normally be used to celebrate the marriage. This is true for purely religious services (e.g., a chaplain blessing a union) or a traditional wedding (e.g., a chaplain both blessing and conducting the ceremony).

The policy's unlikely to have a significant impact on gay or military communities: There's no naval base, for example, in Iowa, one of five states (along with the District of Columbia) that recognize same-sex marriages. And until the DADT repeal is certified by the Pentagon, no service members are likely to be hitching up at the Washington Navy Yard. Not only that, chaplains who disagree with gay marriage on theological grounds are under no obligation to perform the ceremonies, which shrinks the pool of willing wedding officiators to virtually nil.

But there's symbolic power in the policy change—enough to get a rise out of social conservatives.

No a good thing. Not saying the Big Guy Upstairs will let a hypersonic whiz missile take out a Nimitz-class on account of it, but why BE IDIOTIC?

Homosexuality is bad for morale because it’s immoral. It’s like allowing animal abusers. A lot of animal abusers are discrete about it. Not not bestiality. Just abuse of animals. They do it in private. In fact the animals often assent to it, they get a sort of masochistic pleasure from it. At least someone might argue that, and once so argued who could deny it? Pets love their humans. Should the Navy allow discrete private cock-fighting and dog-fighting clubs? Why not?

Federal govt should not allow chaplains to do this.

The states these people reside in most likely will not recognize it.

I know Obama wants these court cases to occur.

If a couple of sodomite sailors want to get hitched at a Naval base in Marxistchusetts, and there are only a couple of chaplains there, and who are NOT inclined to do so, count on them being COMPELLED to perform the perverse charade. You can take that to the bank.

There have always been gays in the military, and there always WILL be gays in the military, but the smart ones have always kept it quiet.

No, there haven't. The quiet ones aren't "gays," they're "homosexuals."

There is a huge difference, and if homo-leftists insist on redefining the language for us, we can at least direct this redefining into a rational realm. "Gay" describes homosexuals who are proud of their perversion, embrace it, and expect everyone around them to just giggle with glee over it with them as well.

There are many who suffer from homosexual urges who don't meet this definition.

And you are wrong about bad things happening to "gays" if the full implementation goes through. They will be untouchable. Even a hint of disapproval will be a career ender.

Bad things HAVE happened to gay sailors who got too frisky or friendly with hard-nosed straight squids.

Only now it will be the straight squid who will get in trouble.

I hadn't quite thought of it that way, but I'll grant your point.

And, sadly, as far as career officers and enlisted men are concerned, your point on disapproval being a career-ender is germane as well. In fact, I have noted on other threads that I even foresee the rise of a new "political officer" class evolving in the services from the present "equal opportunity officers", but embracing much more than ethnic diversity and given real clout. For all intentions and purposes they will be "zampolits" on a perpetual hunt for any sign of political incorrectness.

At the lower end of the enlisted spectrum, however, I am not sure how much things are going to change. The squids at that level are not careerists, don't give a rat's ass about political correctness, and unless I am seriously mistaken, don't like queers very much.

The first time one of the "gay and proud" tries to act up with a hard nosed BM3, he's liable for fall down a ladder. Below decks, and away from the officers and chiefs, the sailors on any warship have their own hierarchy and their own rules. That's what I don't see changing much.

Men men men men
It’s great to be on a ship with men and sail across the sea!
Oh, we don’t know where we’ll land or when, it’s great to be with men!
It’s great to be with men!

‘Cause men can sweat and men can stink and no one seems to care oh!
THROW the dishes in the sink and clog the drain with hair-o!
(Clog the drain with hair-o!)

Men men men, it’s a ship all filled with men!
So batten down the ladies room theres no one here but men!
Men men men, men men men men!

There’s men above there’s men below there’s men down in the galley,
There’s Butch! and Buzz! and Spike! and Biff! and one guy we call

(And one guy we call Sally.)

Men men men, it’s a ship all filled with men,
You’ll never have to lift the seat there’s no one here but men!
Men men men, men men men men.

We’re men and friends until the end and none of us are sissies,
At night we sleep in separate beds and blow each other kissies!

Men men men, it’s a ship all filled with men!
So throw your rubbers overboard there’s no one here but men!
