The heart of this proposal is a wealth redistribution scam to justify handing out “free” cell phones and cell phone service to moochers and zombies.

How else will they be able to receive government alerts advising them of the latest freebies and handouts and reminding them (at election time) of which politicians they can thank for all the free stuff they get and where to go for the next round of handouts.

The reality is that each year fewer and fewer people are tuned to a local radio or TV station where they are likely to hear an EAS alert. It makes a lot of practical sense, though I have no doubt this crowd in the WH will abuse it.

My sheriff department’s emergency services unit left a message on my phone this morning announcing this service for amber alerts, weather emergencies, etc. They already had my number since my mother is on the list for a medical evacuation in the event of a hurricane.

“I can’t imagine what a “presidential emergency message” would be.”

PRESIDENTIAL EMERGENCY MESSAGE:

“The republicans are saying mean things about me. Don’t believe a word they say”

When Constitutionalists, 2nd Amendment supporters, gun-owners, military veterans, anti-abortion activists, tax protesters, home schoolers, small business owners, survivalists, gold and silver bugs, and people that generally oppose Americas transformation into a Third World pit are publicly declared "domestic terrorists" (they are already considered the #1 threat within the FEDGOV bureaucracy. See this MIAC Strategic Report) these Big Brother alert systems will be used to get the public to spy on and rat out their neighbors. All classical police states rely on citizen spy networks and this is it. Is this what my grandpa stormed the sands of Iwa Jima for?

Wake me up when somebody does something about it. The last couple decades of OMGGovernmentIsAfterMe is wearing me out.

I agree. With the state of communications these days, it’s kind of silly that we haven’t yet taken advantage of these capabilities for various kinds of emergency situations.

Not “Presidential messages” so much as key bits of information about what’s happening and where. The ability to customize messages based on GPS location or cell towers means getting better targeted info to the people right in the affected area. It could have custom evac routes, locations of emergency supplies and all sorts of info.

It would be great for minimizing rumor mills that seem to always crop up. I wouldn’t mind having a feed for APB alerts too. If there’s a fleeing suspect what could be better than having everybody with a cell phone suddenly aware of the description and plate number?

Sure, there’s possible abuse, but overall I think it would be a very useful thing.

There’s a pretty wide gulf between a simple emergency alert system and a Big Brother neighbor spy program. We already have the EBS on radio and TV and so far I haven’t suspected that my neighbors are using it to track my whereabouts. All this does is to extend the EBS to the new media of cell phones. Seems like a good idea.

give it a year and we'll be getting text messages about the heat index and SPF solar levels and when to wear SPF 45 sunscreen ...and a helmet for EPA pollution level alerts.

especially in a nanny state like NYC -mark my words.

As someone in the hi-tech world, I can't count the number of ways this could be abused.

It's pre-pay cell phone time (before they outlaw them).
