Texas Moves to Crack Down on Cities Protecting Illegal Immigrants
FoxNews.com ^ | May 10, 2011

Four months after Gov. Rick Perry put out an urgent request to wrap up a bill cracking down on cities providing sanctuary to illegal immigrants, the Texas House passed it Monday night, advancing it to the state Senate, which is expected to approve it and send it to Perry's desk.

Under the bill, police officers in so-called "sanctuary cities" will be able to question detained suspects about their immigration status even if their bosses disapprove.

The term "sanctuary cities" is used to describe places where local officials refuse to enforce federal immigration laws and undocumented workers are free to seek jobs, housing or local government services without fear of deportation.

The bill doesn't go as far as Arizona's requirement that police check people's immigration status, but it prohibits cities or police departments from telling officers not to enforce immigration laws. Cities that fail to comply would relinquish state grant funds.

Many sheriffs and city police chiefs have criticized the bill, saying they are already helping officials prosecute and deport illegal immigrants but don't want more mandates from the state. Other critics said the bill could allow local police agencies to become de-facto immigration enforcement agents and let rank-and-file officers spend all the time they want enforcing immigration laws no matter what managers want.

But the GOP-led House looked past those objections and approved the measure 100-47 after Republicans moved to cut off all debate on the issue.

The vote came on the eve of Obama's first trip as president to the U.S.-Mexico border, where he planned to continue his recent push to revive legislative efforts to remake the nation's immigration laws.

Especially Midland and that area. Seems the old oil money brought lots of trophy brides, who bore lovely offspring. Love going there when I can.

Perry is actually considered a little too RINOish for true Texas conservatives.

The bosses who disapprove should be arrested for hiring illegals. With a few hundred employers in jail, that “cheap” labor wouldn’t look quite so tempting.

“...cities, are still crawling with illegal aliens, and you’re being forced to pay for them.”

The Dallas Morning News reported that 71% of illegals in TX receive some form of taxpayer funded welfare. They don’t all come “to do the jobs Texans won’t do.” They are riding the gravy train, which is about to run out of gas.

What are some of the sanctuary cities in Texas? Didn't know they had them.

What are some of the sanctuary cities in Texas?”

Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, everything south of Corpus Christi. Went to Port Aransas last month. Stopped to buy gas in some small town on the way. Not a soul spoke English, most of the signs were in Spanish and we were truly the only non-Mexicans around.

Thanks, I’m surprised about the major cities even though most major cities are controlled by Dims. I’d have guessed some near the border would be sanctuary cities.

When Texas declares and passes laws preventing the millions of illegal aliens there from using or benefiting from tax paid services, ping me.

Not gonna happen.

California tried that -- Prop 187. The courts shot it down.

State legislatures (and voters) can't undertake to deny illegal aliens welfare of any kind.

It's up to the Congress.

You bet, and this whole sanctuary thing is a joke, since the U.S. is a de facto sanctuary country. Just look at the non-sanctuary cities, as they too are crawling with illegal aliens.

The government is bull sh*tting the people.

In the Houston Independent School District - one of the largest in the U.S. - the Hispanics outnumber the non-Hispanics. Unless something drastic is done within the next five years or sooner, I fear that much of Texas will be just an extension of Mexico.

The illegal Mezkin loving droolers who work for the sanctuary cities will just intimidate the cops, with implied threats, to keep them off the illegals.

Nothing will change.
