Peter Durant (R) wins in 6th District by 56 votes (Massachusetts - GOP pickup)

Republican Peter J. Durant won the 6th Worcester District seat in today's special election for state representative, beating incumbent Geraldo Alicea, D-Charlton, by 56 votes, 3,325 to 3,269.

The two men have been sparring at the ballot box and in the courtroom since November when the razor thin election results put Mr. Durant ahead by two votes, and a Superior Court judge later ruled the election was a tie and ordered a new election.

After the court ordered the new election, Peter J. Boria, a Charlton selectman, and Robert J. Cirba, of Spencer, a Spencer-East Brookfield school committee member, declared their candidacy for the seat and entered the race. Neither man garnered many votes in the five-town district – Mr. Boria got 1,275 and Mr. Cirba was only able to get support from 71 voters.

Today's election saw observers from the U.S. Department of Justice after allegations in the primary of voter intimidation. Also on hand to oversee the election process were representatives from the Massachusetts secretary of state's office and Southbridge Town Counsel Lauren Goldberg of Kopelman & Paige.

In addition, members of tea party affiliates Empower Massachusetts and Show ID to Vote added to the polling drama.

The district encompasses Southbridge, Charlton, East Brookfield, Precincts 1 and 4 in Spencer and Precinct 2 in Oxford.

Last month, Empower Massachusetts and Show ID to Vote launched an “integrity of the vote” campaign based on allegations of ballot irregularities in Southbridge.

Today, the groups observed the election at polls throughout the district, sitting inside the polls and watching people check in. Southbridge officials accused the groups of intimidating voters in the primary by challenging some voters.

It will take a generation of political bleach to remove the stench of the kennedys from the MA body politic.

Now if they could dump the Marxist Brown from the US Senate seat, I’d really be impressed.

Good news! May this be a harbinger of 2012...nationwide.

I’d like to know more about the tea party groups that monitored voting. Every polling place should have some conservative groups to stop democrat cheating.

Is the Democrat going to “contest the election,” “demand a re-count,” and “call for an investigation of voting irregularities” ?

Congrats to Mr. Durant.

I'll bet an espresso that most, if not all, of the GOP gains in the will be redistricted out.

In other news, the Rats want to get rid of the Governor's Council too. Another area where the GOP made a bit of headway. Massholechusettstan.

The biggest problem my state has is most of the conservatives have moved away.

Over 35,000 registered Republicans were known to have left the state a few years ago. No idea how big that number is now.

Same thing in California.

Bleach will not clean out this crap hole.

Even the Iranians would not waste a good nuke on this place if they had it here.

It seems not to matter, red state or blue state — in every election, big or small, ever since The won’s own, his minions have lost, and lost BIG. The Won too will lose and lose BIG BIG BIG regardless of what his media critters are peddling.

It’s good to gain a seat. But still a pathetic minority. They wouldn’t fit in a phone booth but maybe a clown car or two.

There’s only 4 (out of 40) GOP’s in the MA Senate. You actually can fit them in a phone booth (if you can still find one, that is).
