Skip to comments.Barack Obama to be able to text terror warnings to all US phones

From next year, new phones and other hand-held devices will be required to be fitted with special chips to receive the alerts, which will also be sent by state and local authorities. Users will be able to opt out of every type of alert except those from the president, said the Federal Communications Commission.
The system will include alerts about missing children and will supersede all other phone traffic to avoid delays.
Mr Obama, who has been dubbed the "texter-in-chief" thanks to his devotion to his BlackBerry and heavy use of text messages during his 2008 campaign, may face criticism from libertarians for the compulsory nature of the presidential alerts.
But officials see the system, known as Personal Localized Alerting Network, or Plan, as a logical progression from alerting the public via radio and television.
"The lesson that was reinforced on 9/11 was the importance of getting clear and accurate information to the public during a crisis," said Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York, where the scheme will be deployed first next year. It will then move to Washington and most other large cities.
He called the alerts a "quantum leap forward in using

So Obama will have a kill switch for the internet and the ability to disrupt, with continuous alerts, cell phone communication for the US. Sweet.
In simple terms the cell grid will be gridlocked with government alerts. No Thanks! That is not why I have cell service nor pay a bill for.
Run for your lives!
PS: Don’t forget to vote for hope and change.
Drudge had this up yesterday.
The #ing commies know no limits. Conservative statists will tacitly endorse it.
Gotta switch to digital...$500.00 later I have a service that works about half as well beyond the end of the sidewalk...Phone company buyout disrupts my secondary phone service and I get a week to use up the 800 minutes and year's service before that phone is dead. Now, the phone company who bought out my primary cellular provider (by Federal mandate the other provider here couldn't buy them out and have twice as many towers in a very rural area because that would mean a monopoly) has changed styles of phones, and off to the bloody races again with new equipment and a host of 'features' I don't want (I just want a phone that works!).
Now this....If I didn't need one for work, I wouldn't have one.
Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?
The potential for political abuse is monumental. Who here doesn't believe Obama won't piously remind everyone with a crackberry to go vote?
I grow weary of it all.
I think one of the most telling signs of the times was the changeover from “personnel departments” to “human resources”.
That put people on the same level with everything else, whether it is fuel, raw materials, energy, whatever ... people are just another resource.
That dehumanizing change comports with the gradual loss of citizenship evident when we have become a “population” rather than the citizens of our nation. Bacteria can “populate” a petri dish, wildlife “populate” a habitat, one can “populate” a spreadsheet with numbers.
A resource is something to be used for the benefit of the owner. A population must be managed.
This might sound like quibbling, but it is a way of looking at people that is different than thinking of them a citizens of a republic. Citizenship means something, take the Apostle Paul for example, the Roman governor was going to scourge him until Paul appealed to Cesar as a Roman Citizen. Then the governor totally changed his attitude towards Paul, and his behavior. Citizenship is special, it means something, it carries rights and privileges.
But being part of a population looked upon as just another resource is different.
This cell phone thing is just another way to manage the human resources that populate the country. I don't like it.
One other thing - all this “connected” stuff doesn’t impress me at all. Networked, connected, in the cloud - bah humbug!
Next comes free Phones for poor people so they can
Exercise their right to be safe via ObamaTexts.
Ubama doesn't need legislation. A simple royal decree will do the trick.
Somebody just poured some Wesson oil on the Slip-n-Slide of totalitarianism.
Barak Hussein bin Obama al-Kenyata's Health and Human Services commissar is drafting a regulation for personal identification: SS numbers will be tattoo'd to the left forearm.
The day is coming when mentioning the name of your nation will be a crime. Any references to personal origin or geography will be by trading sector grid coordinates only.
Oh yes, one more thing:
The complaints about police overuse of force - that’s really about us no longer being “citizens” but a “population”.
Citizens have dignity and standing and rights. And to infringe upon that is an egregious wrong that must be addressed.
But a population is a resource must be managed. That means “policed”. No standing, no dignity, no rights, all that is subsumed into the states need to manage its population. We’re seeing one example in the airport screening lines.
This cell phone thing is just a run up to bigger better management of the “population”. After all our rulers are good managers that want to conserve and wisely use the “human resources” that populate their country.
I think it’s an infringement to arrogate the power to preempt phone traffic, it’s just another way to “reach out and touch someone”.
Ok, no more, I’ve only had one cup of coffee...
Looks like I’ll be losing the cell phone soon.
How about "communeity" in place of "neighborhood"? As in, "Give back (socialism) to your communeity."
No more cities or towns. You live in a communeity.
Good tag line.
One of my taglines is: “Language is liquid, it runs through your ears like water through your fingers. Propaganda works.”
P.T. Barnum said, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” Lincoln said, “You can fool some of the people some of the time ... “
I’m feeling like P.T. Barnum is one of the “czars” in government. And Lincoln has been proved right over and over again.
“Users will be able to opt out of every type of alert except those from the president”
Oh, so sorry...pressed the wrong button. I’ll pay a $150 fine
I’m guessing that next on the agenda will be interruptions to service so he can make a speech or send a public service announcement or appeal to vote for him again in 2012.
Special chips to receive alerts? So, what more will the “special chips” be capable of??
Yeah, rots a ruck getting that one enforced.
They may get away with requiring new phones to include said chips but only a ninny would voluntarily allow the Central Planning, Nanny-Statist, Big-Gubmint to tinker with existing cell phones, most notably, mine!
Not surprising, there is no outcry how this will disadvantage the poor, you know those who can't afford a drivers license to prove they are citizens when voting???
And there will be a new fee (non-tax deductible, of course) tacked on to your bill to support this program. Naturally, those who are receiving cell phone service at no or reduced rates because they are “disadvantaged” will pay no such fee.
Good point. The first time somebody tries to put a chip in my phone, the phone goes in the garbage can. I already don’t fly.
Little by little they will force us off the grid, where we can’t communicate except in the good old-fashioned person-to-person way. All the hip little communicators can stay plugged in until they forget how to use their brains.
THX1138 was a masterpiece and George Lucas a genius—except when I watched it a few years ago they had deleted the part about the elementary school teachers. Oh well, that didn’t turn out to be too prescient anyway, did it?
Will be REQUIRED? FUBO.
Guess my new phone this year will be my last phone.
My simple four word reply, thank you Mr. Bob Grant,
GET OFF MY PHONE!
My simple four word reply, thank you Mr. Bob Grant,
GET OFF MY PHONE!
Oh, not just the libertarians.
Get the damn government out of my personal life.
And I can see the entrepreneurial nature of our country generating black market businesses that can safely remove those things.
I'd be up for that.
What’s to stop him from sending anything to our phones and having us arrested for downloading (you fill in the blank)?
Think about that one.
Keep the one you have for as long as you can!
Just don't buy a new one when/if this happens.
Or - Hi there! You are getting this because I am Me and you couldn't opt out from Me. I am the One we have been waiting for. Carry on with your waiting. Oh yeah, terror alert tamale - the true owners of America are coming to take back what is theirs - don't interfere and nobody gets hurt (except for a few hundred thousand or so pent-up-rage killings).
Oh - but of course since they can mandate the purchase of health care, they will mandate everyone buy a new cell phone and then via technology render any old ones inoperative.
very well said.
Buy a Canadian plan with international roaming? How about the prepaid anonymous phones bought with cash? Maybe they’ll be outlawed.
OK! Reason #1001 why I will never acquire a cell phone.
Anybody know? Is there a way I can rig my TV so it never displays his image or transmits the yell or the whistle that constitutes his voice when he favors his worshipers with a “speech”?
You mean like the 72 versions of the presumed killing of Osama bin Laden?
Hate to ruin your day, but there already are free phones for poor people:
There are certain people I don’t want having my cell number. This POTUS is one of them.
WTF? When the WTC towers collapsed, the cell towers located on top of the WTC went down too. Survivors were trying to find old fashioned pay phones to call their families and leave messages.
It’s bad enough already with the TSA gropers, and now we peons will have ubiquitous Obama-chips implanted in every cell phone to receive the royal announcements from the Kenyan Clown?
That’s true. In DC the cell networks and the land lines all crashed on 9/11, predictably. So there is a another reason for this plan, because everyone knows there will be no phone service in a true disaster.
‘_______changeover from ‘personnel departments’ to ‘human resources.’
Just wow. I am very surprised to see this subject/job title brought up.
I have a family member who originated that position for the aircraft company he worked for back in the late ‘50’s.
He was sent off to another state, and in very many ways ‘administered’ to other employees who were being transferred from the home base, usually on a short term basis, and he was called a “Personnel Administrator.”
Sometimes, a ‘Field Base Administrator.’
He opened 2 other field bases in 2 additional states during his career.
By the time he retired in the mid ‘90’s, the term ‘human resources’ was around.
Not in his office - ‘Personnel Adminstrator’ to the end!
Why do I think he will somehow use this for fundraising?
