Reid slams GOP ‘interference’ in Boeing labor clash
The Washington Times ^ | May 11, 2011 | Tim Devaney

The Senate’s top Democrat on Wednesday harshly condemned what he said were “inappropriate” attempts by Republican lawmakers to intervene in a controversial labor dispute now before the National Labor Relations Board.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, said the GOP moves were an attempt to “poison the decision-making process” in the increasingly bitter dispute over plans by aerospace giant Boeing Co. to open a major new, nonunion manufacturing plant for its premier 787 Dreamliner fleet in South Carolina.

The NLRB, in a move that has outraged leading business groups and South Carolina officials, has issued a complaint about the move, charging the new plant was an illegal effort to punish Boeing’s unionized workers for a series of past strikes.

Mr. Reid said he was not judging the merits of the dispute, but he said the political pressure on the independent NLRB went beyond the pale.

“This kind of interference is inappropriate,” Mr. Reid said in a statement. “It is disgraceful and dangerous. We wouldn’t allow threats to prosecutors or U.S. Attorneys, trying to stop them from moving forward with charges they see fit to bring to the courts. And we shouldn’t stand for this. It may not be illegal, but it’s no better than the retaliation and intimidation that is the fundamental question in this case. It should stop.”

Boeing now has a plant in Puget Sound, Wash., that manufactures seven airplanes a month. The company is spending $2 billion on a new plant in North Charleston, S.C., to manufacture three more per month. The company says it will not cut jobs or production in Washington state; in fact, it has added more than 2,000 positions since it announced plans to build the new facility in 2009.

The NLRB is the one interfering in the market. The GOP is objecting to that interference.

Harry is brilliant at accusing the Republicans of what the Democrats are continually trying to do.

The reality is that it is all political now. If the Republicans don’t adjust to that fact, they (meaning the conservatives) will continually lose ground.

That's it! Harry Reid is ‘The King Of Projection.’ He's also annoying as hell.

I think the Dems made a big mistake on this one. Look, after disappearing during the Wisconsin dust-up, Obama felt he needed to throw a bone to his labor base. So we get this weird NLRB ruling, a month before the SC plant is supposed to open. The Obama makes the excuse that he doesn’t control the NLRB..it’s “independent.” I suspect they expected to quietly have it withdrawn in a few months...but instead, business may finally be waking up to the danger that Obama poses. Alon with the proposal to require disclosure of political donations by all who bid on government contracts, they’ve really stepped in it. I will really hurt their fundraising..and the blowback will be mammoth.

Yes, and two of the new NLRB members are former union attorneys that were recess appointed by Obama.

Correct. The government, no matter which branch, has no right to tell a company were it can locate.

When did the federal government start having the power to tell a private company, engaged in legal commerce, where it could, or could not, locate? This is outrageous.

poison the decision-making process

He means poison HIS decision-making process like the kinds of decisions the creep along with Pelosi cramed down the American publics throats. This man has got to go. My stomach turns just thinking about the little weasel. Yes, union payback is what it’s all about. In 2012 and beyond we must never let these little egomaniac, egotistical, know it all, done nothings EVER get a fist hold in our government again.

I believe you’re correct about their fundraising and blowback. I also believe Boeing will take this as far as they have in the courts to win, including SCOTUS.

Reid is an old worn out shell . When he is shown on tv his stench comes through the screen . Why anyone shows this babbling cadaver any respect is beyond me . Instead of ass-kissing he and his ilk , we should be stiff arming .
