Bostons chattering classes are struggling with the stunning political defeat of one of Harvards most popular academics at the hands of Canadian voters, painting Michael Ignatieffs historic loss as Liberal leader as a new low in Canadian politics.
A series of editorials and articles published this week in the Harvard Crimson, Boston Globe and elsewhere have blamed Canadians for being close-minded and anti-American when they handed Mr. Ignatieff and the Liberals the partys worst defeat in history.
Harvard sees itself as the centre of the universe, so Im sure it felt it very deeply, said Graham Wilson, chair of Boston Universitys department of political science.
In a front page article, The Boston Globe said the main reason for the Liberal collapse was that Mr. Ignatieff the former director Harvards Carr Center of Human Rights Policy and an expert on international military interventions had views on the Canadian mission in Afghanistan that had pushed war-weary voters toward the more left-leaning New Democratic Party.
The papers editorialists noted with some disbelief that Canadian politics had become surprisingly caustic and described the sadness and indignation his former Harvard colleagues felt at seeing that Conservative attack ads painting Mr. Ignatieff as a foreign Ivy League elitist had played so well with Canadian voters.

Oh, you mean there was an election in Canada and the conservative won BIG.
No one down here in the USA happened to notice.
In recent years it is the Conservatives who have fostered closer trading and military ties with the US. The Liberals have railed against these ties.
So now where will snotty lefties in the U.S. threaten to run to if they dont get their way in elections here?
surprisingly caustic
amazing...when the left loose its words like this and how people are just too dumb. it couldnt be his liberal policies, perish the thought
and of course
‘Conservative attack ads painting Mr. Ignatieff as a foreign Ivy League elitist had played so well with Canadian voters.’
er, you mean like telling the truth, like?
now let me just lay back a bit...and think....
BAWHAHAHAHAHA....
nothing better to my ears they a looser whiny liberal
It’s funny. In a forum I used to participate in the canadians could never help but follow and comment on US politics where as we could care less about theirs.
They were libs of course. They must be spitting fire right now. LOL!
I don’t think too many of us would vote for a candidate for Congress who lived and worked outside the country.
“Conservative attack ads painting Mr. Ignatieff as a foreign Ivy League elitist”
Were the ads telling the truth? I guess that is why their panties are in a wad.
WHy don;t we just dissolve all governments everywhere and let Harvard run the whole show. They really are that smart. And if you even question that, we have proof for your stupidity.
That’s a good question. France used to be an option, but they’re banning burkas and being generally intolerant of the flood of immigrants. How dare they.
Well that's the problem. Everyone knows Toronto is the center of the Universe.
Why were the ads described as ‘attack ads’?
Ignatieff is a Harvard professor and ‘policy expert’ who has never held a REAL job in his life, who interacts ONLY with other liberals who share his ‘beliefs’ and who has lived most of his life in the United States.
Canadians calling him an elitist, ivy-league, foreigner is hardly an ‘attack’ — it is merely the TRUTH.
The Liberals called for this non confidence vote thinking they’d be forming a coalition gov’t with the NDP (socialist) and Bloq Quebecois (separatist) parties. The Liberals got absolutely demolished and they’re no longer the official opposition (unfortunately, the NDP replaced them). It begs the question about what sort of polling they were listening to or were they simply too arrogant for their own good?
Last time out the Liberals propped up Dion who had the charisma of a damp dishrag and Ignatieff might have been even worse which I didn’t think was possible. Next time out I wouldn’t doubt if they prop up little pc wuss Justin Trudeau.
Our media would be raving about the election if the lib had won. Given the result and the fact that the conservative won the rich, poor, working class, religious and non religious there will be NO mention.
good job Canada!
Our media only reports stories that they enjoy working on -- like liberal victories and the increase in poverty during Republican administrations. Otherwise, it might as well not have happened.
