Earlier this year, Education Action Group released a chart documenting the 15 separate steps involved in firing a tenured teacher in the state of New Jersey. The process involves a months-long investigation followed by a trial which can last a year or more. All told, it takes between two and five years (and a pile of money) to terminate an ineffective teacher in the Garden State.
The destructive nature of teacher tenure is, of course, not confined to New Jersey. If it were, we could all rest easy knowing that Gov. Chris Christie is on the case. Unfortunately, teacher tenure is wreaking havoc all across the fruited plains.
Take this recent case from Michigan. According to the Jackson Citizen Patriot, “A former Stockbridge High School teacher accused of threatening to kill the principal signed a severance agreement that will cost Stockbridge Community Schools about $135,000.”

I think she aimed too low threateniong a mere principal.
If she’d said she was going to kill the school superintendent they would probably have given her a ‘cool’ quarter of a million dollars up-front, a $50,000 annual pension and lifetime health care coverage...
IF this site/group is for holding teachers and their unions accountable, why don’t they print the name of the “Former...high school teacher?”

If she had made the mistake of calling the principal a 'fag' or a homo, she would have been out of there in a nanosecond, gotten NO check and likely ended up in jail.

if that payment short-circuited a few years worth of termination process, it was money well spent. Hopefully that agreement did not include suppressing the incident and allowing her to seek continued employment as a teacher.
It’s not the way it is in N.J. all across the country. If a teacher doesn’t work out, all districts have the means to replace them, to believe they can’t is lunacy, no joke.
There may be more to this than meets the eye. If you are in government employ, you retire on a pension. People may have problem with such nice pensions for the government upper class, while we serfs who work actually producing for America don’t get pensions at at all. That’s a valid point.
But if someone who is in a pensioned, tenured position is retired on disability, then he will get his contracted severance.
He showed R films to students, threatened to kill people - my guess? Severe Bipolar disorder. Been there, seen it. It’s a true mental illness. And the first thing you do is get them OUT, because they will do it. If a person really goes crackers that way, it makes perfect sense to them.
If you have this problem, it’s one of the few things you never have to argue with SS Disability over, either. They are usually locked ward hospitalized.
Fair - and sad - enough. What then do they need six-figure pay-offs for, though? Candy bars from the hospital cantine?
The six figure is probably normal severence you get when you retire on disability in the school system. To me, that is probably the problem.
Or perhaps they had to agree to a higher amount to get the guy out of the school legally. If it is what I think, he is the type to “go postal”.
