Trains to Detroit will be faster, have more room with high(er) speed rail money Florida rejected
Medill Reports ^ | 5-12-11 | Austin B. Smith

Posted on 05/12/2011 4:53:05 PM PDT by dynachrome

One of the projects to be funded with the money Florida rejected will be to transform 135 miles of Amtrak’s Wolverine route, which runs between Chicago and Detroit, into a higher-speed rail line, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

This improvement, which will cost $196.5 million, will be paid for by the federal government. Trains will be able to reach speeds up to 110 mph, compared with their current top speed of 79 mph. The trip, which currently takes more than 5 hours, is expected to be more than 30 minutes shorter.

“This is not true high-speed rail by traditional definition, but it is improved,” said Megan Owens, executive director of Transit Riders United. She said a true high-speed rail, such as the one being proposed on the Los Angeles-San Francisco corridor, is far more costly.

Owens said she views the money as an investment. “Doing this now is worthwhile and will be a very substantial improvement in travel and [true high-speed is] not realistic at this point in the foreseeable future.”

Yeah that was what I was thinking - go from one hell to the other much more quickly.

So we (you and I and other productive members of society) are going to spend $200M (I almost GUARANTEE the costs are more than that) so that Amtrak riders between Detroit and Chicago (have we narrowed this down enough yet) can make their trip THIRTY WHOLE MINUTES FASTER!!??

Wow

I saw an interview with that idiot Ray LaHood on CNBC. Even the folks there were snarking at the idea that anybody outside the NE corridor would even think of riding trains.

When asked about LameTrack losing money for 19 of the last 20 years, LaHood replied he’s only looking at the future.

Gonna be quite some magic trick considering the fact that the bulk of freight into and out of Detroit (and beyond) uses that route.

You stole my thought. Who in their right mind would want to go to Detroit? It looks like they’re determined to spend 200 million on SOMETHING so let’s pick Detroit. This is your federal government in action. I would look at this and say, there’s no demand for it and we can SAVE 200 million by NOT building this. Did this ever cross their minds? I doubt it.

And here in Michigan we don’t want it.

Maybe we should start a campaign to convince Rick Snyder to donate it to the victims of recent natural disasters in America.

Yeah, it’s not even “high speed” rail, just a little faster than now.

Even after all the expensive improvements the "high Speed rail" will still take longer than the bus at about 3 times the cost. The train makes many stops along the way, while the bus goes straight through.

Why will anyone take the train when it is slower and more expensive?. This is just another waste of money

Its not likely to be built anyway. If it is built it won't be high speed. Here in Michigan there are probably 50 towns that grew around that line. There are houses and stores within as little as 50 feet of the track now.

Grass Lake Michigan is just one of those towns. You aren't going to run a train through there at 110 mph. Also there's the fact that its the main freight line across southern Michigan, that's gotta go somewhere.

Oh good - I'm paying for high speed train to Detriot.

Nevermind that bulldozing the city and replacing it with farmland and wilderness has seriously been considered - a billion dollar high speed rail project is still a SWELL idea.

BTW, I'm not making that up. They really have been talking about bulldozing Detroit. Perhaps the wrecking crews could get to work faster with this nifty train.

That math doesn't work, unless it's an attempt to kiss Obama's butt and make him look good in front of the math-impaired.
