An 11-year-old boy in Orange, MA is in the middle of flag controversy after he and his family claim one of his teachers banned him from hanging a picture of an American flag he drew in the classroom because it might offend other students. The boy‘s dad is adamant his son’s civil rights were violated. But the school has a different take, and says the prohibition was because the boy disobeyed instruction

If the boy burned the flag instead, the school would hail him as a hero.
Wonder how they’d hail someone for burning the flags of the left’s favorite dictatorships?

The kid was supposed to working on other studies at the time he was drawing the picture. They have the pledge every morning and fly the American Flag outside the school. On this story, I would not blame the school. The kid was not doing what he was supposed too. Of course the brat will be made a hero and probably receive a free scholarship to college......Unbelievable.

“According to Frankie Girard’s father, John, the boy was in art class drawing a picture.”

“Superintendent, Dr. Paul Burnim. He refused to go on camera, but told 22News over the phone that nobody ever told Franklin the drawing was offensive, and said the only reason it wasn’t hung was because Franklin was supposed to be doing other work; not drawing a picture.”

Which is it....an Art class or not....other work is rather ambiguous.

Since when is drawing a flag and wanting to display it a situation of consternation?

You may be right here...but it could also be the typical backfilling.

All I know is this is one reason why kids are getting away with everything. They have decided that paying attention and doing what they are supposed to be doing are out the window. If the art class called for doing whatever picture you want and the school didn’t like what he drew that would be one thing, but if you are supposed to draw what the teacher asked and the kid decided to draw what he wanted, I could see the school getting upset. Regardless these kids are the future and they have an entitlement thinking that does not help America at all. All this would be mute if parents would all homeschool their kids. Since that is not happening than the kids have to do with the school gives as assignments.

My, that would be quite the change, wouldn't it? Kid who made an issue out of an issue with respect for his country getting a scholarship instead of a leftist kid who feels he is discriminated against and wins a big lawsuit and fame because he wants to wear heels and a dress to the junior prom.

That would indeed be unbelievable!

Right! This is how the communists and worse take over a nation..We have learned NOTHING from history.

You just might consider that the kid had finished what he was assigned, and used the extra time to do another drawing. Bright kids do that frequently, y'know.

And what the school does (pledge/flag) is irrelevant to the actions of the teacher...who, for all we know, is a screaming leftist who hates the US.

The concept is fairly ridiculous, because it presupposes the notion that being offended is some kind of standard by which to live by, although it’s never defined - merely that because someone doesn’t like some thing, concept, or idea, that by itself is enough to censor.

Truly that way lies madness, which is the point. Your tax dollars at work.

Would it be mute or would it be a moot point? Just wondering, do you home school?

So let’s just praise the kid and give him a parade. That is what you want anyway and when he turns out to be a cry baby leftist because he doesn’t get his way all the time don’t come crying to me. That is how it begins. Don’t like the rules complain to the media or sue the school.....Wow. What a great thing to teach children.

Of course. I actually don’t, my wife does....although I help with school work at night. I believe my wife would be upset if she gave our children (4 of them) work to do out of the lesson plan and they decided to draw pictures instead. If they finished the work that my wife gave them, then they could review the lesson. These stories just make me angry because they always believe that the student is the saint in the scenario and that is just not the case at times. Even my four angels don’t want to do the course work at times but you just have to suck it up and do the work assigned. (four angels....lol).

I made up my poster boards EXACTLY as American flags. I even have the 13 bars and 50 stars...;-) They are HUGE and stand out quite noticeably. I always have a patriotic theme in my room, and I am not even a history teacher!!! ;-)

I graduated high school in 1970, so you know about when I was 11 years of age. The teachers always had boisterous kids that either they sent to the principals office or they notified your parents.

If kids are expected to be adults at an ever earlier age, a la homosexual education in grade school, they are being robbed of they're childhood.

Foisting a lock-stepped education will not produce the next great anything.

This is annal......an nothing more. It'll only encourage mindless rebellion at a later age.

If you believe what the school is saying. Sounds like this started inside one classroom, then we get explanations, or spin after it became a news story.
