One of Canada’s leading TV sports broadcasters fired one of its anchors Wednesday after he voiced support for true marriage on Twitter.
Damian Goddard, the now-former host of “Connected” on Rogers Sportsnet, had tweeted his support of Burlington hockey agent Todd Reynolds, who created a stir this week when he criticized New York Rangers hockey star Sean Avery for shooting a TV ad backing gay “marriage.”
“I completely and wholeheartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage,” wrote Goddard on May 10th. He also voiced support for U.S. Olympic gold medalist Peter Vidmar, who resigned as chef de mission for the 2012 U.S. Olympic team after homosexual activists created a controversy over his support for true marriage.
Sportsnet had distanced themselves from the comments on their own Twitter account. They announced Wednesday that Goddard had been fired and did not specify the reasons.
“Mr. Goddard was a freelance contractor and in recent weeks it had become clear that he is not the right fit for our organization,” said Sportsnet spokesman Dave Rashford in a statement.
Nevertheless, Goddard is standing by the comments. “In terms of what I said, I stand by it,” he told the Toronto Star. “I’m a devout Roman Catholic. It’s not about hate at all.”
Every time something like this happens in my area, I both write and call to let them know that I will not watch/listen/read until they reverse that decision. If that’s forever, I’m okay with that. I do not need programming from a bigoted and intolerant network in my life; if they have no room for real Christians in their world, then I want no part of them.

I have heard they are already using hate speech laws to silence pastors up there, but I do not have a link to confirm it. I know that it will only be a matter of time before that it is done here in the USA. My only hope is that the ACLJ will make those laws be used on real hate groups like LaRaza and the NBP.

I agree, I do believe we’re so close it’s not even funny now. I do hope that we get to see their comeuppance, but I have this wedding to attend that’s been in the planning for ever, so we’ll have to see. If I miss the wedding though, I’ll catch pure hell for sure.

Unless I’m mistaken this is NOT state run TV. Censorship is when the Government shuts you up.
To me this reads as a company that did not like his comments so they fired him. Same thing could and has happened here in the US. Private companies can fire people if they don’t like what they say in public and they hear it will impact their business.

Rogers Sportsnet is owned by Rogers Media , trades on the Toronto Exchange, RCI.B (TSX) . It's not the Canadian government .

The story of Damian Goddard today and the story of Todd Reynolds yesterday was what I was referring to. Both voiced support of traditional marriage, both are now unemployed. And there have been many many stories of people who supported California’s Proposition 8 and have had to endure the public wrath of pro-gay marriage advocates.

Remember what happened to my fellow canadian Mark Steyn? There ya go. I left kanadastan in 2007. I still LOL at the canadian threads that because canada lowered the tax rate it’s all hunky dory....I’m back in Vancouver twice a year and the biggest industry is security guards just to guard the massive and empty Olympic facilities.

The big thing here is, the guy admitted to his beliefs, and bit the bullet by getting fired. I at least accept him doing that as the correct thing. As for the gymnast, it is disappointing that such a great athlete is gone from our team effort.
