Tokyo Electric Begins Prep Work to Cover Reactor Building
Fukushima, May 13 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> on Friday started preparatory work to place a covering over the building that houses the No. 1 reactor at its Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power station in northeastern Japan.
As early as June, the company plans to launch the main work to cover completely the building, whose top part was heavily damaged in a hydrogen explosion.
The company hopes that the cover will contain radioactive substances and thus help improve working conditions for plant staff.
The measure is part of a roadmap announced by the company in April on containing the nuclear crisis at the plant, which was crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
The aim is to shield the building with iron frames and a polyester fiber covering 47 meters long, 42 meters wide and 55 meters high.
