TOLEDO — Wildlife researchers in northern Ohio want to know what’s killing thousands of walleye in Lake Erie.

Many of the dead fish have been washing up on beaches between Toledo and Port Clinton in recent weeks.

Ohio Department of Natural Resources biologist Roger Knight says it looks like the worst might be over.

The walleye is Lake Erie’s most popular sport fish and draws anglers from across the Midwest and beyond.

The smell of Toledo's improving?

Boarded up windows and steel bars abound. It's becoming Detroit south. Even famous Tony Packo's restaurant is in receivership proceedings.

I grew up in Toledo and the beaches ALWAYS smelled like dead fish.

I grew up in Toledo too, but married and moved far away when I was young (a blessing for which I am thankful). It's a democrat city decaying rapidly.

Why red states turned blue in 2008 - Ohio

Snip: A full 56% of families making less than $100,000 annually, representing 79% of all Ohio voters, voted for Barack Obama.

Maybe they drowned.

I was thinking maybe it was mildew from being wet all the time.

This could be related to the heavy rains washing more mud and pollutants into the area around the Maumee and other rivers draining agricultural lands. The western basin is shallower than the east, and the water quality may be suffering.

Then again, Lake Erie fishing has become a very robust enterprise and a few thousand fish more or less won't make a dent in the overall take.
