While much attention has been focused on rebel efforts in eastern Libya and in the city of Misurata, rebels have held control of most of the Nafusah Mountain region since the unrest began in February. The region has strategic importance because it provides access to supply routes in the south. An estimated 150,000 people live here, many from the Berber minority, which was neglected by Col. Muammar el-Qaddafis Arab nationalist regime. The regions geology and its proximity to Tunisia have helped the rebels resist here.
