Two days after U.S. Navy Seals Team 6 made headlines around the world for the dramatic raid that killed terror mastermind Osama Bin Laden, the Walt Disney Company trademarked their name, reports FishbowlNY.

This doesn't effect how the Navy uses the moniker for military purposes, but it does mean we may soon be seeing 'Seal Team 6' branded products and entertainment.

According to records viewable online with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Disney filed the Trademark paperwork on May 3, 2011 for 'Seal Team 6'.

I’m guessing some kind of animated feature with actual seals as characters? something like Penguins of Madagascar?

They haven’t trademarked “Seal Team 6.” They’ve applied for the trademark.

I doubt they’ll get it.

How is that different than attempting to trademark ‘United States Marines’

This is beyond stupid. As far as I’m concerned, we shouldn’t even know Osama’s dead and sure should not know what a “treasure trove of information” we supposedly took out of there. BoyObaMao is either a fool or a traitor - and I don’t think he’s a fool.

“Walt is probably spinning in his grave.”

Yep, Walt was a pacifist and had some socialist tendencies, actually think he was implicated in some of the congresional hearings in the 50's investigating concerning communist infiltration of the entertainment industry, strange for a guy who founded and was CEO of a major U.S. corporation. But, anyway, I think the “right thing to do” for Disney would be to set up a foundation for wounded, disabled Seals and for the families and children of KIA Seals. And, dedicate 50% of the profits made for Seal Team 6 name. Let's see what Disney does, hopefully, the right thing...

Our tax dollars created Seal Team 6 and it is a part of the government. What gives disney the right to trademark the name? Could they also trademark the names US House of Representatives, The President of the United States, or maybe “Texas”?

All I can say is try wearing anything with USMC on it and not be a Marine.
Like the Hells Angels, the Marines wont tolerate any fakers who buy the colors and sew it on a jacket. If a person does, expect to be called on it if caught.
Disney has no respect for anything American.

I saw a documentary recently on WD and it sure looked like he was a patriot and capitalist, especially during his appearance before the Committee. IIRC, radical unionists alienated him when they struck the Disney business

So the Navy will not defend its intellectual property?

I thought I heard that the operational group that was once known as 'Seal Team 6' has been re-named, and that the official position of the military is that "there is no such thing as Seal Team 6, no such entity exists."

That opens the possibility of an outside commercial entity copyrighting it.

Same is true for the term "Area 51." Or "Dittohead."

Or "Freeper."

I wasn’t a Marine. I did my four years active duty in the USAF. But I have a whole drawerful of Marine T-shirts. The Marine Security Guards at embassies around the world sell their particular T-shirts, usually emblazoned with the USMC flag and the legend “USMC Security Guard Detachment, American Embassy (name the capital). On the back is some type of localized logo. The Marine Detachments sell them to everyone passing through or stationed at the embassies; the profits garnered go to pay for the annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball. I have had no problems wearing those shirts all over. I would NOT, however, wear the standard red USMC shirt with the yellow lettering. I proudly wear my old USAF shirts and caps

If you were AF, and not a member of a USMC Security Guard Detachment, then you didn't earn the right to wear the shirt.
Just another form of stolen valor.

Our tax dollars did not create “Seal Team 6”.
It created elite fighting forces second to none throughout our military branches.
The name is meaningless, it’s the men who put their lives on the line who give it meaning.
Our boys are most likely out in the field again doing their job as I write this.
Because of them we don’t have to sleep with one eye open.

God bless them all.

You ain't seen nothing yet.

Last Friday on the John Batchelor show a NY Times movie reviewer was on absolutely raving about Obama and how recent events are just like the classic movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. So I bet this is in the works. :)

America's network and cable TV pundits and America's newspaper editors and publishers have joined with President Obama and Hollywood to say..

Move over James Stewart and John Wayne! Heeeere's Obama and The Man Who Shot bin Laden. A remake of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance starring America's greatest hero ever! President Barack Hussein Obama!

Network / newspaper critics say: "Oh, Gracious God, Thank You So Much! It’s such a blessing to be able to let America see you as you really are! Mr. President, thank you for taking time out of your day! Oh, gracious God, thank you so much!"

To all of our military personel who have served with honor, dignity and fidelity.

No words or pictures can ever demean your service in the heart of a true American.
It is you who have given up personal ambitions to defend this country against all who would see its demise.
Given the direction this country is heading, there may well be a time where we will have to stand together to defend this nation against the rot within, but I pray this does not happen.
If it is to be so, there are many who have not served who would be proud to fight and die at your side.

Just a lone voice in WI

I heard a parody of a movie trailer, “The Man Who Shot Osama Bin Laden” on Rush’s show almost two weeks ago. I thought it was very funny. It can be found on Youtube.

Paul Shanklin apparently did a parody of “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” ten days ago.

I would think only a disney stockholder would want to grant disney an exclusive right to profit from Seal team 6 cartoons, Seal team 6 action figures, Seal team 6 day at disneyworld , and maybe even a Seal team 6 movie complete with gay love interest. All of these would of course feature ubama as their esteemed leader.

My thoughts are that if the taxpayers paid for training, equipping, and supporting that elite fighting force, we should protect their effectiveness. To me that means not not encouraging the publicizing their activities such as we would do by granting one company the exclusive right to cheesy merchandising profits.

I believe that this is pretty much what the Seals want as described here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2720205/posts

Every embassy at which I served (where there was a Marine Security Detachment) sold the shirts to every one who came up with the $25 or $30. I was not a member of the Marine Detachment but I WAS a member of the embassy’s staff. If the Marines didn’t want us to wear their shirts, why would they sell them? I occasionally ran with the Detachment in Havana, running down 5th Ave with them, wearing the shirt. I feel the same way you about those who steal valor. My daughter bought a USMC Security Guard polo shirt back from Kabul after her last deployment.

You too my FRiend. I was rummaging through some old papers the other day and came across one of the letters Mel (Marine Vet from msnbc chat days)wrote to be me before he died.

I really regret not doing down south to met him and his wife and family before he died.

I did get a letter from his son after his death. He told me his dad loved the signed autograph copy of War Stories that Col. North signed for him. I did not know until much later that when Marine Vet was a Gunny,he served with Col. North

I do miss some of the folks from that chat, with the exception of Free Mumia or whatever his name was.

I remember the original song. Shanklin was very good! One of his best IMO. Thanks again.

I'll even bet that the NY Times movie reviewer somehow heard it and was fooled, inspired, and rushed off to express his admiration; he missed the end where Obama is mocked.

I think he told Batchelor that he linked to segments of the movie to highlight Obama's daring.

Dear Walt,
We tried, The character artists tried. We tried to keep your vision of ‘Americana’ alive. We tried to keep your characters a good influence to kids and not do things just for a buck. Like dressing Mickey, Donald and Goofy as rappers, Oh, I forgot your dead. You don’t know what they are. Rap is singing like Dr.Suess but not for kids.
Anyway your company was taken over by a bunch of fashion Ave, male flight attendants and advertising lesbians. and the artists were put into cubicles and then told to ‘think out of the box.’ These are bullsh!t terms by talentless turds to make them sound ‘creative’.
I tried to pitch a program based on the WW2 patches you did for the Government when Hollywood use to back America, it’s a long story and it was before 9-11. Forgot again, 9-11 is an even longer story and you don’t want to know.
My idea was shot down, the reason.....”’Mickey is a universal citizen not just an American.” I guess you didn’t know that when you created him.

Anyway Pearl Harbor II happened, that was 9-11 Walt. Just replace the Arizona with The Twin Towers.
This time a Democratic President doesn’t fight the war, he caused it.

By this time your artists were moved out of their cubes and out of your company. (This is the way we run companies now in America.) Well after this tragedy they couldn’t wrap Mickey or put him in front of a flag fast enough and I couldn’t help think it was for a buck.

Now I know, and I will say it again, YOU F@<%!^& WHORES!

Since then Walt, I use my talent for our troops, I am using Capt. America, you own him too and yes they are going to destroy him.
Signed, the last American artist you had.
