Two days after U.S. Navy Seals Team 6 made headlines around the world for the dramatic raid that killed terror mastermind Osama Bin Laden, the Walt Disney Company trademarked their name, reports FishbowlNY.

This doesn't effect how the Navy uses the moniker for military purposes, but it does mean we may soon be seeing 'Seal Team 6' branded products and entertainment.

According to records viewable online with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Disney filed the Trademark paperwork on May 3, 2011 for 'Seal Team 6'.

I’m guessing some kind of animated feature with actual seals as characters? something like Penguins of Madagascar?

So the Navy will not defend its intellectual property?

They haven’t trademarked “Seal Team 6.” They’ve applied for the trademark.

I doubt they’ll get it.

How is that different than attempting to trademark ‘United States Marines’

This is beyond stupid. As far as I’m concerned, we shouldn’t even know Osama’s dead and sure should not know what a “treasure trove of information” we supposedly took out of there. BoyObaMao is either a fool or a traitor - and I don’t think he’s a fool.

It’s not, and the application will almost certainly be rejected just like an application to trademark “United States Marines” would be...

“Walt is probably spinning in his grave.”

Yep, Walt was a pacifist and had some socialist tendencies, actually think he was implicated in some of the congresional hearings in the 50's investigating concerning communist infiltration of the entertainment industry, strange for a guy who founded and was CEO of a major U.S. corporation. But, anyway, I think the “right thing to do” for Disney would be to set up a foundation for wounded, disabled Seals and for the families and children of KIA Seals. And, dedicate 50% of the profits made for Seal Team 6 name. Let's see what Disney does, hopefully, the right thing...

Our tax dollars created Seal Team 6 and it is a part of the government. What gives disney the right to trademark the name? Could they also trademark the names US House of Representatives, The President of the United States, or maybe “Texas”?

All I can say is try wearing anything with USMC on it and not be a Marine.
Like the Hells Angels, the Marines wont tolerate any fakers who buy the colors and sew it on a jacket. If a person does, expect to be called on it if caught.
Disney has no respect for anything American.

I saw a documentary recently on WD and it sure looked like he was a patriot and capitalist, especially during his appearance before the Committee. IIRC, radical unionists alienated him when they struck the Disney business

So the Navy will not defend its intellectual property?

I thought I heard that the operational group that was once known as 'Seal Team 6' has been re-named, and that the official position of the military is that "there is no such thing as Seal Team 6, no such entity exists."

That opens the possibility of an outside commercial entity copyrighting it.

Same is true for the term "Area 51." Or "Dittohead."

Or "Freeper."

I wasn’t a Marine. I did my four years active duty in the USAF. But I have a whole drawerful of Marine T-shirts. The Marine Security Guards at embassies around the world sell their particular T-shirts, usually emblazoned with the USMC flag and the legend “USMC Security Guard Detachment, American Embassy (name the capital). On the back is some type of localized logo. The Marine Detachments sell them to everyone passing through or stationed at the embassies; the profits garnered go to pay for the annual Marine Corps Birthday Ball. I have had no problems wearing those shirts all over. I would NOT, however, wear the standard red USMC shirt with the yellow lettering. I proudly wear my old USAF shirts and caps

If you were AF, and not a member of a USMC Security Guard Detachment, then you didn't earn the right to wear the shirt.
Just another form of stolen valor.

Our tax dollars did not create “Seal Team 6”.
It created elite fighting forces second to none throughout our military branches.
The name is meaningless, it’s the men who put their lives on the line who give it meaning.
Our boys are most likely out in the field again doing their job as I write this.
Because of them we don’t have to sleep with one eye open.

God bless them all.

Good for you. I wish I had a crack at buying one of those shirts. Would be a good addition to my shirt collection.
