Gingrich Backs Obamacare's Individual Mandate

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he strongly supports a federal mandate requiring citizens to buy health insurance – a position that has been rejected by many Republicans, including several who likely will be running against him for the Republican presidential nomination.

Appearing on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.

I’m not supporting Newt, but let’s not distort what he said. He isn’t exactly backing obamacare. Not even close.

Did you read the article?

He refused to criticize RomneyCare, and makes it clear he supports a federal government solution to healthcare coverage. The details vary, but what he's describing would be similar to Obamacare.

Clintons, along with all the Libs, attacks on him back in the 90’s changed Newt.

I would actually feel better about him if a brain tumor was discovered, this announcement is crazy, political suicide, talk.

Newt Lemming Gingrich - over the cliff he goes.

"Gingrich replied he would not make it an issue in the campaign and said he agreed with key aspects of Romneycare"

New Flash, Newt. The minute you said it, it became and will remain an issue.

Yes it is rather close, in accepting the unconstitutional premise of the individual mandate. That represents a faulty view of individual rights under the Constitution that we cannot reward by election to the WH. Newt just ended his candidacy. IMHO.

Let him talk. The Nation doesn’t lose capital because a man wants to share what he knows.

" ... that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman,..."

No, Newt was a champion of conservatism in most things, but never an across the board champion of conservatism. Newt is reasonable when he's dealing with keeping the government from expanding into something new, but he was always more inclined to try and make existing programs more efficient or a less intrusive solution than getting rid of them. Years ago he was talking about everyone having to buy insurance and what sort of subsidies some would need to do so as well as how tax cuts would free up personal money to make it less of a burden.

I always wondered if that was a ploy to get independents to vote for conservatives. Unless he makes a huge deal out of denying he's for Obamacare and spells out a really new approach to everyone being insured, I guess we'll finally know it wasn't a campaign ploy or technique.

Shame on Newtie— but remember, this was the guy who was going to ABOLISH the Depts. of Commerce and of Education in 1994— LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE. Anyone else wondering why Newt, Pawlenty, Mitt Romney, Mitch Daniels, Huck and other assorted LOSERS are being floated by the MSM for Present?
