Boehner says ready to cut budget deal today
Reuters/Yahoo ^ | 5/16/11

Posted on 05/16/2011 5:46:54 AM PDT by markomalley

House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner on Sunday said he is ready to cut a deal on raising the debt limit if only President Barack Obama would get serious about spending cuts.

Obama warned that congressional failure to raise the debt limit could lead to a worse financial crisis than 2008-09 and urged that debate stay separate from spending cuts.

Both sides stuck to their well-staked out positions, showing little evidence of movement.

Boehner and fellow Republicans warned of dire consequences to the economy if the debt limit is not linked to spending cuts and deficit reduction.

"I'm ready to cut the deal today. You know, we don't have to wait until the 11th hour," Boehner said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

He questioned whether Obama was serious about deficit reduction. "He's talking about it. But I'm not seeing real action yet," Boehner said.

The Treasury Department is expected to hit its $14.3 trillion borrowing limit on Monday but says it can stave off default until August 2 by drawing on other sources of money to pay its bills. That timetable has created a sense in Washington that any political deal may be far off.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke have warned that failure to raise the debt limit could hamper the fragile U.S. economy, which is making a slow and painful recovery from the 2007-2009 downturn, with a 9 percent unemployment rate.

Would someone here please post a link to the actual Republican Party platform planks? Or...if they have the actual facts, simple present them here.
I’ve looked all over the place and cannot find them.

Oh...I’ve seen lots and lots of opinion on what they “are” or at least should be, but I’ve never seen the actual Party Platform list.

Thanks....in advance

I saw a clip on Fox this morning about the interview with Boehner. Okay, the man was laughing like a nut-job. I wish to heck the Republicans can actually address true national policies that affect OUR lives with some dignity and seriousness. I am truly beginning to think Boner has a few screws loose.

The reason Obama isn’t serious is because he knows the GOP will continue to debate itself and ultimately cave in. I’m tired of all this GOP posturing on the talk shows.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke have warned that failure to raise the debt limit could hamper the fragile U.S. economy,

About that, he's right. Ending deficit spending will cause enough of a reduction in GDP to meet the formal economic definition of "Depression".

However, failure to get spending under control in the near-term (three years or less) will make us envy Weimar Germany.

Boner is worthless. We are in for another massive cave-in to the idiot who's in our White House.

We will continue providing cash to Planned Predators while they ruthlessly slaughter unborn and newborn babies, we'll continue to fund the lefty playground called NPR, and we'll continue to fund anything else that that skinny illegal alien wants. And Boner will concede.

My God! When will all this end?

I remember how obamma pulled the wool over the Republicans eyes during last recent showdown, then proceeded to tell them at the bill signing he was not going to abide by their silly czar rules that they had put into that bill. obamma stuck his tongue out at the Pubs!

The Pubs are clueless, wimpy, and not to be trusted.

Boehner will cave, just watch it. He will claim victory for good press, but ultimately will be on the losing side.

A crisis is being created. BO will agree to some cuts, because the country is being held hostage (sarcasm), the debt will be raised, the economy will tank (double dip well on its way already), Republicans will be blamed (they cut too much), BO will be elected for another 4 years. Why you ask?? The truth does not get out to the people because no one wants to tell the truth, the media won’t convey it anyway, and the public doesn’t want to face what would need to be done to fix our economy. Game, set, match, America goes down.

The Pubs get snookered every time they make an agreement with the arrogant bastard and his minions. Recall the last deal where the administration said it was agreeing to approx 355 billion reduction. After the deal was done, it was reported it was actually a cut in the hundred million range

Pubs should be pounding the administration daily to put the burden back on the administration to STOP SPENDING MONEY WE DO NOT HAVE! and come up with a plan to get the budget under control by cutting spending.

Frugal use of Air Force One would be a small symbolic gesture to start

I am actually torn on this issue. The great depression started out as a recession(and not the worst one)the feds loosened the cash supply, like they are doing now. The main reason we went from recession to depression was a sudden, extreme tightening of the money supply(there are other things involved that made this happen, and some of them are in play right now)..so, as much as I hate to say it, bernanke is correct, but so is boner....we cannot allow such an extreme contraction of the money supply to happen overnight. Linking this to spending control is the answer, but I truly fear the pubs will cave, or not get the assureances IN WRITING that will make a soft landing possible...raising the limit and increasing spending will lead to recession....not raising the limit may lead to depression.....

I hope this isnt like the last deal where he comes out of that secret room with Obama and Reid and then lies to his Republican house members and us to get his compromise passed. Remember that the $39B turned out to be more like 1/2 billion.

At least this is not a hard political deadline like the shutdown was.

Otherwise, you are the one who will be getting rolled.

(There's your answer Boehner)

Both sides stuck to their well-staked out positions, showing little evidence of movement. (Boehner will blink. Obama has Pelosi eyes.)

Boehner and fellow Republicans warned of dire consequences to the economy if the debt limit is not linked to spending cuts and deficit reduction.

The Treasury Department is expected to hit its $14.3 trillion borrowing limit on Monday but says it can stave off default until August 2 by drawing on other sources of money to pay its bills.

This may be a temporary solution if the "other sources" consist of excesses of government spending, ie fat, waste, corruption and other liberal fiascoes.

If Boehner stays his scared little compromising self, he will cave.

Under no circumstances should the debt ceiling be raised.

And spending needs to be cut drastically.

While your words contain a good deal of sense, I'm not reading the platform to find out if professional republican politicians actually adhere to it.

Instead, I'm reading it (and the democrat one too) to find out how they each compare with where I actually stand on the issues.

Doing this helps me look at where I stand on the political spectrum, and if a third party actually starts, where I would like to see it on that same spectrum.

Just a few of many examples
1. Abortion
2. Use of the US Military,
3. US Debt,
4. Federal Gov't's role in supporting a polyglot nation of mixed races, beliefs, social strata, etc.
5. Illegal aliens/migrants
6. Energy and man influenced climate change,
7. Fed's role in "creating jobs",
8. Taxation (in all it's many forms and guises),
9. Education,
10. Self-help vs handout.

These really are just a few....and I know where I - internally - stand on them. So now, I'm going to dig deep on these and many others and find out where the two predominate parties stand on them.

Just keeping a very old mind active.

the fragile U.S. economy, which is making a slow and painful recovery from the 2007-2009 downturn, with a 9 percent unemployment rate.

I'm sorry, but I don't see any recovery from this. In fact, I see worse off than this. I am SOOO sick of being told by the media or talking pundits, that we are in recovery. NO, we are NOT! We are in recession STILL!! When unemployment continues at 9% (or in reality, higher, more like 15%)...we are NOT in recovery.
