The tendency here is to always assume homogenity when it does not exist and to paint with a broad brush. The article does not say French, it says French Socialist Politicians. That would be the out of power French Socialist politicians.
It can be argued that the reason the man was arrested and the reason socialists are out of power is one and the same.

Socialists in France then, are the same as Socialists here, the rules don’t apply to THEM!!!
